Hey guys,

 

I'm building more and more sites in Wordpress now, so really need to get my head round the whole back up system. There seems a ton of services around to do it free and paid (eek).

 

Aren't I right in thinking:

 

- Copy all files from root

- Download a copy of the database

 

Isn't that's all that required in it's most basic form?

 

Then I could have a plug in either e-mail me the latest posts/save when changed or upload a back up to dropbox? (Does anyone recommend a plugin for this)?

 

Been looking at hosting backup options but will end up costing me an extra £20 a month on hosting at least which I'd rather avoid.

Hi Chris,

 

The simple answer is indeed yes, so long as you have a copy of the files and indeed the database you will have the necessary files to re-install the site. There are however steps you would need to take if you were to migrate the site to an alternative domain however from such a backup.

 

There are a few plugins for this and a quick google reveals this: http://wordpress.org/plugins/backwpup/ looks to have the features you are looking for and is indeed free .

https://deliciousbrains.com/wp-migrate-db-pro/ does this, not for free but email and dropbox options are not often so. Might be worth looking into if you are building a lot of WP sites. Sometimes it pays to have some extra security.

do you have the option to easily back it up through the hosting control panel? mine has one button backup (and it restores everyrthing cos i had to go back ot a previous day's backup ) (i have the basic package from here http://ukwebsolutionsdirect.co.uk/uk-web-hosting.php ) that's 36 quid *a year*. also installatron makes it very easy to install or remove wordpress from there too.

If you haven't got a huge site then this plugin is perfect: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-backup-to-dropbox/

 

Get a free dropbox account (luckily I got a lot of space with my Samsung phone) and then use this to backup.

 

I would schedule it to run when you anticipate the fewest number of visitors - I run my UK sites at 1AM and my US sites at 1AM Eastern Time.

 

Not only does it work when you back it up, but I've actually had to restore a few times and it's been perfect.

If you would like a simple plugin to backup your files and database then backupwordpress plugin is the one. http://wordpress.org/plugins/backupwordpress/

 

Tell it how often to backup and your away! It even sends the backup to your email address if the files size isn't too large!
