Forget 800x600. I normally make my layouts 960px wide. Looking at my own stats i must say that over 50% of my visitors are still using 1024x768 so you can't just ignore lower resolutions.

But if your 800x600 visitors can't afford to upgrade to a better graphics card and a bigger display they probably can't afford your products or services either, so don't worry about losing them. You can optimize for handheld but that's a different story.

Generally i design for 800 width. Mostly because it is easier. Wide website are usually hard to keep clean and usable. If i do make an website for 1024px i usually make sure that the important stuff on the website falls within the 800 resolute "zone".

 

I think 1024px is certainly an option especially if you concide the audiance. If your making a website for the latest new on phone your probably gonna get less people with 800px than if you were making a website for City trip for the elderly.

I build to 1024px wide. As mentioned above 800px wide is not a huge amount of users plus who is really using 800px wide nowadays?

 

If you're dumb enough to use 800px for surfing then you can bloody well do some horizontal scrolling until you get it through your thick skull

I still try to use 800 width but I think in the future I'll start to use wider designs!

1024*768 is now the industry standard ATAF.

 

Go with this, the last few users on 800*600 (about 1 in a 1000 on my site logs) will likely have moved on within 6 months.

 

Always have designed for 1024*768, I haven't seen a monitor running 800*600 in a looong time.

1024x768 here. So that means I will go to about 960px fixed or 100% fluid layouts.

 

There comes a point where you have to stop pandering to the tiny (less than 5%) minority and restricting what you can do because of it.

Your best bet would be to make a fluid layout that adjusts to different screen resolutions.

It's all well a good until you look at an 800px website at full-screen on a 1280x1024 monitor (which are getting very common!). It's also not very effective for layouts with a lot of content. Why restrict yourself?

 

Rawkes is currently 840px wide in the content, even that was pushing it for being too thin.
