I'm thinking of adding an iPad Mini to my testing devices, but also to replace my current iPad's for reading eBooks on a lighter device.

 

Aside from reading the main Apple site and general reviews, I wanted to know if any of the guild here have one and whether it's a good addition. Neither of my iPad's are Retina and I opted out of a Retina MacBook before. I'm lead to believe from a few sources that type looks increasingly better on a Mini compared to an iPad 3.

 

Anyhoo, that's the gist. Not interested in any fanboy rants or Mac vs PC - just how any owners find it for testing and/or a primary reading device.

I've got an iPad mini, got it a couple of days after it was released. I then dropped it while I was outside, and cracked the screen and ended up having to wait a month for a new one, as every shop had run out!

 

I don't do that much browser testing on it to be honest, I have a few different web apps that I use so never. I will occasionally test on it, mainly to check fonts/sizes, and it's perfect for that side of things!

 

I use it mostly to reply to emails (nice and small meaning easy to reply while in bed!), and to browse the web and read my eBooks.

 

For reading it's perfect, nice and lightweight so after a few hours your wrists are not aching! In fact, when I pick up the other iPads now I notice how heavy they are!

 

So my conclusion, it's well worth it!

Yeah - I have two; the monochrome and the Fire (not mine, but have access to )

Ah - Mr Tracy! I was very aware you have an iPad Mini - I remember you mentioned some months ago (yep, good memory, bad memory - mostly when it suits). That's kind of what I wanted to hear really. I remember when I go the first iPad on release (ish) and thinking how heavy it was. I tend to read in bed but it's always so cumbersome. Think I might get one this week

Too small is of course an issue, but testing different sizes is of course important, so you can be sure that every user can see what the need to see!

My daughter has the 1st gen now. I bought the iPad2 overseas as it was

significantly cheaper - despite knowing the iPad '3' was coming out. Not

sure if a new iPad Mini will be out this year though as I don't their

release schedule (iPad was originally May 2010 when I got it, iPad was

June..?)

Ha ha! I've been debating for the past week or so. I love Apple stuff but I wouldn't say I'm a fanboy and don't keep up to date with specs. I was under the impression that the Mini was retina, but having done the simple thing to do and look at their site, realise it isn't.

 

I almost bought one in Covent Garden over the weekend (one of those 'jump in head first impulse buys'). Thankfully I was with my wife and she vetoed it I only read last night that there might be a retina enabled Mini come November this year, so I think I'll just hold fire till then. As I've been using my iPad practically every day, I was thinking of getting something smaller and lighter as I fear I'll break my nose it I drop it when reading in bed!

I've got an iPad 3, but the later version. I bought it mainly for testing and it's great.

 

When I first went in to the Apple shop I thought the standard iPads were the iPad mini's, they're really not that mini.

This is what i wanted to say too...buy a kindlefire. anyway the price is cheap compared to an ipad mini. and i read several reviews that kindle specializes ebooks.
