Making a my own website but can I integrate a CMS into it?

Featured Replies

Hello WDF,

I have been searching google but I seem to be not getting any luck of my question. Basically I am asking is I am making my own website for my band but I would like it to be able to be updatable by any members of the band, so I thought CMS is a good idea but is it possible to put e.g Joomla integrated with my site or do I have to learn to make a theme for joomla?

Want further detail please request.

Thanks,

Taylor.

A CMS might be a good idea, depending on your band members' web skills. There are varied opinions on the forum on which CMS is best to use. There is no real best one overall but you can narrow it down to the one that's best for the job in hand. Depending on your skills, WordPress is always a good universal CMS to use. That's not to say the others wouldn't work, it's just my opinion.

From my point of view (I'm not a WordPress expert by any means) you have two options. You could build a child theme or a theme from scratch. My preference is the latter but it will perhaps take a bit more time but it's certainly not unachievable. I recently built a site off of a WordPress theme. The advantage of that is you'll get regular updates and you can't really 'break' the theme as such. All you could do is a couple of cut and paste type methods with your static site and ensure everything is running tippety-top. The disadvantage of using a child theme is you may have to significantly alter the appearance of the site to get to your goal but it's not really all that difficult.

Joomla! could be an option but I've never used it. Alternatives I can recommend are Concrete5 (for the sake of simplicity for your band mates) or Perch. You have to pay for Perch though. I thought it was £15 but it's more like £50 but you get excellent support and it's a nice and clean CMS. My money is on WordPress though.

Good luck :)

Hello,

Well I have used Wordpress in previous times of work and it's a good CMS indeed. I'll have a look into themes on Wordpress and see what I can achieve.

Thank you.

If you are looking into implementing CMS into an HTML website then Pagelime or SimpleCMS could be for you!

Hello,

Oh thank you, they seem helpful. I'll have to have a go with one of those with an old site.

Thank you!

Just had a look at SimpleCMS. Looks interesting. At a quick glance it looks similar to Concrete but looks like you have to pay a monthly fee for SimpleCMS. Bookmarked nonetheless. Good link, Neil :)
