Hi Everyone,

Slowly building up my 'on the side' web design company and thought i better get signed up here to keep up to date and hopefully branch out properly in the future.

I've been making various websites over the years mostly of the gaming variety (computer games not gambling). Looking to expand on my SEO knowledge so i will be spending a lot of time learning in that side of the forum.

I did try a review site once. Looked great but then i realised id never have to time to keep it up to date with original content, would need squadron on writers! So i stuck with the fan stuff for friends. Various PC games a few clan websites etc. Fun to make but they never last!

Making clan websites/forums and game reviews is more-or-less where I started off. Same as you, reviews seemed to difficult to maintain without employing writers and there's too much competition for that.

 

I'm sure you'll learn a lot here.

Looks like I've missed out on these clan side of things. More of a Starcraft 2 type, but as Robby mentioned - it'd be nice to have a look at what you've done.

 

Forgive my ignorance, but in a nutshell what are these clan sites all about? It reminds me a bit of when I was a kid and people used to play Games Workshop and were in different camps and used to write fanzines about upcoming events. I used to work with some uni guys who belonged to a Quake II (or III group) and used to do events on their servers of some sort.

My first clan site was a very basic HTML/CSS website with a phpBB forum linked from it. Basically a group of online friends who organised to play AA together. It was great fun...although I played too much and ended up getting into a more serious clan with servers and what-not. The word "clan" doesn't really apply to the group I was in - it was just a group of 15 - 30+ year olds who played together, and chatted on TeamSpeak whilst playing. It was basically a massive laugh, with a game as the social meeting point and activity.

 

We had clan matches too, towards the end of my time. They were more serious, though. Things got heated.

Sounds a lot of fun I am a bit of a gamer, but seldom play online as I know that I'll get carried away. Some friends coaxed me in to 'trying' World of Warcraft a few years back. At the time, I had quite an important job but throwing that out the window, I ended up staying up to all hours of the morning going on quests at ridiculous times as I was playing on the American server via Japan. The guy who got me into was the equivalent of Leeroy Jenkins (I won't post the link as I'm sure you've all seen it). That guy was awesome

I used to play AD&D at school, loved it. COD4 on the PS3 I was in a clan but I was like a TA to their SAS (I was pants!). Lately I bought SKyrim vs Elder Scrolls from Steam to indulge my inner nerd but whaddyaknow it doesn't work on Windows 8.

 

I had Morrowind, Oblivion then Skyrim on release date. I predicted the ridiculous time involved, so I did a blitz on it and finished the story in a week. Going to Google (it's not a verb!) Skyrim Vs Elder Scrolls now...

No links anymore for those sites as with most clans they sorta disappeared after a couple of years

 

Some went as far back as jedi knight 2, quake and counter-strike!

 

More recently was world of warcraft but then we switched to guild-launch because of all the plugins... nevermind. Its a shame really i wish i kept them going (mostly on crappy hosts). Could of used them now for my portfolio a couple were very good. u'll have to take my word for it for now but i'm sure there will be another soon! hehe

Haha! Been ages since I watched that video. I've never played WoW, but I've played an embarrassing number of hours on Guild Wars so understand the underlying joke of it. The guy working out the percentage chance of success right before Leeroy comes back just tops it all off perfectly.

 

I daren't try WoW, although it's never appealed to me as much as Guild Wars - WoW just seems a bit...childish? I honestly don't mean that to offend anyone, but the graphics and choice of characters etc. has always seemed to me as a bit "young". The graphics of Guild Wars 2 are genuinely stunning, and I looked at the latest WoW patch - it's about Kung-Fu Pandas...?

 

Sorry Dave, your into thread has definitely turned into a gaming thread! Counter-strike - good man. I'm terrible at it, but have played it on and off for years now

seems like you brought up the inner nerds of us allready. having that said, im still a huge nerd. playing dungeons and dragons every wednesday, filling a lot of spare time with league of legends. and I am not even gonna start about the time i have spend in WoW. stopping with mmos was one of the best decisions I made.

@Andy9I - I thought the same about WoW. The reason I never played it beforehand was because I knew I'd get addicted. I agree - the graphics do seem a bit childish in many ways but it was the addictive nature of levelling up that got me. I think my first unofficial taste of games for levelling up was Baldur's Gate. I'm not really into fantasy stuff per se, but I like statistics and things (like Premiership Manager). I don't play these types of games anymore because they're too addictive. Last online game I played was Gears of War when it came out. The one I'm playing at the moment is Resident Evil 6. I say playing - haven't touched it in 3 weeks. Other than that, it's the Wii and trying to decipher the Japanese other than the word 'Start'

 

I never got into D&D. Had a board game called Hero Quest and that was about it. I used to collect Games Workshop figures for a week as I liked painting them and making scenery but never played the game. Used to collect Elder and Orcs - for all you GW fans...

 

@robbydesigns - I use a Mac so probably rules me out of Skyrim vs Elder Scrolls. The only games I have on my 'workhorse' is Monkey Island series and Plants Vs Zombies. I just get console games as they're generally less involved than PC/Mac games I prefer to play

every wednesday evening, so today again. we play 3.5 it's like the highlight of my week xD

So I brought my charactersheets and dices again yeh. Here at the company where I am doing my internship, they say i'm going gambling every week because of the sound of my dices in their box.

But yeh, we're running 2 campaigns at the moment, doing a routine. 2 weeks Stefan's campaign, and then 2 weeks Ricardo's campaign. And less regularly I DM my own sessions, but well I don't have the time to do that every week next to my normal d&d, driving lessons, 40 hours a week internship, working on the side, extra school assignments,( and gaming )

Fully sympathise. I have an addictive personality that seems to be tailored (fortunately) towards computer/technology - I think that's partly why I've done so much programming. If I get stuck on something, I don't care how long it takes me, I'll get it fixed before sleeping.

 

I'm no fan of single player games, strangely. I honestly cannot remember the last time I played a single player game (ie. not MMO, or at least online) except for GW2. GW2 is probably the only game in the last 5 years that I've happily played "alone" (obviously you're in worlds with others, but y'know...everyone's busy). Perhaps it's the nostalgia of GW1 a few years ago that helps keep me interested in GW2? Either way, it's one of those games you can lose weeks to - so avoid!

 

Edit: As for Black Ops 2 on Xbox...I literally lose days on that game, whilst knocking years off my life expectancy due to intense periods of stress and anger.

Ah. The Xbox Psychic is the same one as per your link - didn't know about the Rick rolling side of things though - sorry about that. A couple of them made me laugh where some of the guys get really astounded that he 'knows so much'. I haven't seen the videos since last year. I guess it got popular enough to insert Rick

That is strange, how does he know their names?! Is it staged?!

I doubt very much that it's staged. I've had many theories such as; he contacts the persons friends beforehand, he listens to conversations they have and after a while contacts them, he works for Microsoft and has access to their details (he had the details of a boy's parents address and credit card). But it doesn't explain why he knew about the colour of this guys first car, what he wore to prom, etc, etc...

Sometimes threads get hijacked a little and lose momentum (regularly guilty of this - sorry people ) but glad you're one of us (I'm saying this in a mock Village of the Damned tone ).

 

I wouldn't say we're nerds, I think more uber cool Ha! Let's start another thread on music then film and you'll see some real nerdiness from yours truly...

middle earth. hmm havent ever looked into that. I have been wanting to start some warcraft d&d group. there are a decent amount of book available and I know a little too much lore. playing all warcraft games, reading the novels, and actively roleplaying on wow does that to you . In fact the campaign I'm dm-ing has some plot construction influences from wow.

they're trying to stop a cult from bringing demons into the plane. while at the same time they are trying to gather some artifacts before some necromancer does it and uses it to create a huge army of undead to invade the world. what they do not know is that they demons are linked to the necromancer ( think of the scourge /burning legion relation in warcraft) or that the necromancer who they are trying to stop by gathering the artifacts before he can, is actually the guy for who they are trying to gather the artifacts for. In the assumption that he will destroy them. so long story short, they are gathering the artifacts for the bad guy himself.
