What tools are everyone using these days to check out SEO competition, organiclistings, backlinks, PPC campaigns etc?

As per my experience am using some best SEO tools..i.e.:

* opensiteexplorer dot org

* xml-sitemaps dot com

* ahrefs dot com

Yes i like ahrefs but it seems that it's index hasnt been updated for a month or so - is anyone else finding the same with new links not being picked up at the moment ?

They've stopped the crawler for the last few days. It was picking up new links prior to that but I do think something is up with it. I should've seen a bigger influx in links

Was thinking the same myself, although relatively new to the tool, I know for sure I have way more backlinks on certain sites than it is showing....

Yes is quite annoying as after they took off the keyword tool they would be putting more emphasis on just the backlink tool but I am not seeing it very responsive at all right now

I actually find Google webmaster tools to be the most accurate (funny that), typically they show the highest number of backlinks because it only shows Google indexed links. Typically if a link is indexed on Google, it's also indexed elsewhere on the likes of Yahoo! and Bing.

You can export the whole lot and run them through other tools to check, if needed.
