Hello everyone

 

I have a client who wants me maker to them an online news paper similar to this one (link below) and my question is how do i get started with this project what should i do first please help.

 

Ps i know all the basics Css/html some jquery etc i am in second year uni

maybe draw a design of the site the client wants once that is done, try to break it down into sections of what you are doing so maybe design the layout before putting the content in.

Well for the design part you should be okay as you have said you know HTML/CSS for the content of the site you would have to use some server side script so PHP and a database (MySQL) which would be used for inputting data into the site from a control panel then also display it on the front end of the site.

I think you can't avoid it.

If I was you I should start with learning PHP and SQL.

Or hire someone to do it for you.

If you are at Uni and you don't know any scripting languages; to be frank, you aren't going to deliver that; you just won't have the time to learn how and then build it (unless your a genious or are happy to flunk uni).

 

As the example site is not in English I am not 100% sure what everything is on the site (digging into the detail); but it looks as though it's akin to the mainstream newspapers and news channels. There is a lot of functionality on there and of course a publishing system behind it.

 

You could effectively build it with Wordpress; sites like TechCrunch use it; but you'd need to do a big custom job on it (either manual extension or using plugins).

 

The larger news sites use various solutions; such as Vivvo and other more expensive publishing suites, some may even have bespoke solutions.

 

So it's not outside of the realms of possibility but you'd still need to learn how to skin the thing.

It looks to me like it is functionally similar to mainstream news sites so if you have no serverside application development experience then you will struggle; especially being at uni.

 

However...

You make a PSD or mockup of your website first so you can just convert it later to html.

Not trying to be rude, but I hope your client isn't paying you a substantial amount of money for this project. There is no way you can properly learn the required skills for this website during the duration of it's development and attempting to do so will probably result in an insecure and horribly coded website... if you even succeed in creating one (seeing "index.html" in your link above is not convincing).

 

I really hope you understand that taking on this project could not only be a potential problem for your client, but for you (and your reputation) as well.

I'm not sure what that question even means. If you're asking how to make the website without coding it, then you should read the post above mine and then work on the design solely. If you're asking us how to make the website look good, this would be incredibly difficult to answer as you haven't given us anything to look at thus far. If you're asking how to accomplish this website properly without the "advanced stuff" then I'm here to tell you that it's impossible.... unless you deliver a static .html mediocre website to your client with no CMS or database management... in which case you'd be setting them up for failure because then they'd have to understand your code in order to edit their own website (or they'd have to hire someone).

I pointed you to the CMS that powers cosmopolitan and sky already. All you need to do is learn how to do pretty designs and HTML/CSS and learn how to skin the thing.

 

Hard work but a bloody sight easier than building the thing, learning on the fly.

 

Oh or hire someone who knows how to skin it.
