I am considering buying a mac, but what I want to know is, will a standard 27" IMac work with all the adobe cs6 program's smoothly or will I have to upgrade the iMac for more ram?

Yes, it will. My 2010 iMac has very similar specs with a 2.8 i5 processor. You won't need to upgrade anything. Remember OS X has much more efficient memory management, and requires considerably less of your system resources to run itself.

 

Do not buy your iMac now, wait for the refresh this fall.

Apple do not set release dates. They will be refreshed September/October.

It should be just fine with the standard 4Gb but you can always buy more later on if you feel it is struggling.

Good point. Especially with RAM, it's literally a 30 second job to upgrade an iMac's RAM now.

 

The only upgrade worth doing via Apple would be an SSD - yes the upgrade is overpriced, but I pity the fool who tries to put their own SSD inside an iMac.

I use a 2010, 13" MBP for all my work, works fantastic.

 

I've upgraded to an SSD and 8GM ram, thing flies and never misses a beat.

 

However, I'd caution against getting an iMac, you can't change out HDD's and it's obviously not portable.

Get yourself a nice 15" MBP then upgrade the HDD to an SSD (I'd recommend the samsung 830), then use an external monitor.

That way you can move around and work anywhere.

 

Oh and the newer MBP's almost (and in some cases do) beat out the iMacs in performance, so yeah.

 

It's that or you're best waiting until they release new iMacs late this year.

If you're not completely against the idea of a PC, Windows AIOs are catching up fast and there's a couple of models out there now that are arguably much better than an iMac. The Lenovo A720 is just as beautiful a piece of kit as the iMac, yet it has a screen that can fold flat and works as a 10-point touch screen (for each one of your fingers). Which I think is awesome.

 

There's also the HP Z1 which has stunning "upgradeability", you can upgrade every part and it takes two seconds. Memory, hard drive, optical drive, etc. The Z1's downside is in pictures it looks like it's all plastic, but actually it's aluminium and glass...just in black.

Maybe, but as it stands they have very few patents relative to most other popular tech companies - most of which only do hardware. Apple do seem more aggressive though.

Come on now, cheap replicas is not really fair. The S3 is nothing like an iPhone, and nothing about it is cheap. Apple just can't stand the fact that another company is doing well in the same market. TVs quite frequently look very similar to each other, but TV manufacturers don't sue each other on a near constant basis.

I never said anything about phones - but the fact that you automatically brought that up is worrying in itself don't you think? I'm not arguing at all, just pointing it out. Tech savvy people like you and me can spot an Apple-esque design. I would honestly move away from iPhones if Android had it's imperfections touched up a bit better.

 

And yes, very worrying that they're attacking Samsung like this. One can only hope - for their sake - that they have found alternate suppliers. I wonder who is supplying the new MacBook screens?

I think LG/Philips/Sharp (can't remember who owns who) supplies pretty much every IPS panel on the market at the moment. Samsung mostly supplies TN and various *VA panels.

Apple are quite aggressive with relation to the patent disputes, however I guess they have the cash to do it.

 

I'll say this...they were quite naughty setting up a fake company to acquire the Ipad name rights...just so they could pay peanuts for it and not the value related to their company...naughty naughty.

This. There's two sides to Apple unfortunately. An innovative, industry-changing side. Jonny Ive has been a hero of mine since I was about 14. I practically was in love with the original iMac.

 

But their business side, the side that behaves in this aggressive manner sucks. In that regard, they are just as bad as the very company they seemed to be fighting against - M$.

I never mentioned anything about the S3! I've just had to Google it to find out what it looked like - and it looks nothing like an iPhone. I would go as far as saying it looks like a Samsung device. I mean, if 'Samsung' wasn't plastered across it and I had to guess, I would go for either Samsung or LG. It has that premium plastic, neatly rounded look that these companies have used for years.

 

As for doing things better than an iPhone. I think most Android devices made in the past 6 months do more than an iPhone - and then it's down to personal preference as to which does things better.
