at work we are thinking of changing our web site to something that is CMS driven, only thing is we have no idea which is the best way to head in, does anyone have any opinions about which is the best/easiest to manage CMS system out there, doesn't matter if we have to pay for it, just want to be able to adjust our own web pages

If I may elaborate on this.

 

If you are running a normal brochure website that has a common type of layout, with several pages, maybe subpages (that compose of text, images, maybe some embedded videos) then your requirements for a CMS will be pretty low, a standard solution will suffice.

 

If its a more involved type of site, or one that introduces certain features, a more advanced CMS may be required.

 

If however the site is a review site or a news site then you have more specific requirements that lend more to publishing suite type CMS's.

 

If the site has large volumes of structured and cross referenced information or data; like for example MSDN, Apples Developer Reference or Adobe's developer references then more of a knowledge base type solution would be practical (while you could technically use some regular CMS solution for this, it wouldn't be as practical).

 

If the site has an online store or a forum or social features or anything else for that matter, then your requirements change again.

 

 

Basically "CMS" is a broad term for a plethora of different types of solution to manage the content of a website or application; the scope of which is incredibly broad.

Ah right thanks Richard, clear as mud now

 

We need something that will basically be a 'brochure' but on some of the pages as well as it being a 'brochure' we want to have a buy this item facility, I do have a little bit of HTML knowledge but unfortunately nobody else at work does, so for there sake it needs to be foolproof, so anybody can add or delete stuff off the pages, I hope that makes it a bit clearer.

 

It doesn't matter if it's a paid for script, it just has to be easy to operate

In that case I would probably go for Wordpress and have a look at a few plugins for purchasing.

 

It's a simple solution, regularly updated, has lots of plugins and it's free.

 

I would avoid Joomla and Drupal; and go for Wordpress.

If its a brochure website and you have no programming knowledge I would use Pagelime, Its great and easy to implement! just add "cms-editable" to the html within the class= and its then editable within the CMS! its great! check it out.
