Has any one been affected by the latest penguin update and if so any thoughts on the subject...

I am not directly affected by penguin update but I do know some folks who think they lost some traffic because of this new monster. so I share with you what I told them.

As we all know through this update Google targets Spam sites, make sure that your site stands perfectly White (I mean White Hat "SEO"ed) in Google's eyes. Most of us do follow the rules but chances are there that without our knowledge we might look like Black Hats. So just revisit the Google guidelines and re-evaluate your site once again!

I was spanked from 1st place to page four

I should add that at this point I frikken detest google.

but opn the other had its done me a favour. Almost none of my work comes from organic search results anyway.

going back to the old methods to get work

Edited by byronc

I've benefited greatly from this new update.

I have a website which was ranking nicely for a few keywords (It's an experiment website), it bombed off Google not to long back. Finally got it back to where it was, so it doesn't take much to sort it out.

Diversify your back-link anchor text and C-blocks (Basically on as many different domains as possible), use this time to mix up your content and work on your title tags and basically clean up your website.

Although I have seen spammy websites come to the top and good websites drop. There are a lot of bugs with the new algo but I think that is just because it has shaken things up more.

My advice would be to work on your websites, change the copy and diversify your backlinks. It might take a month or two for things to even out though.

i have a question, would appreciate any advise.

Say I have a e-com site, selling oak furniture (hurrduh), and on the majority of images, I would use title/alt text such as "oak wardrobe", "oak bedside cabinet" etc, then will google see that as "over optimizing" even though I am merely providing a 100% accurate description?

How many different ways can you write something like "oak [product]"?

I think this is the reason our clients side has recently fell from page 1 to page 3.

Advice appreciated.

From my point of view, it should effect you because of that. Each alt tag is different.

It's when you stuff them full of keywords, and then blast a ton of links using the same keyword to that website.

I think you'll be fine (although alot is up in the air at the moment).

Yeah they are not stuffed, we believe alt tags are first and foremost for accesability, but something is obviously wrong due to the huge drop in rankings.

Hmm, we will have to further look into, but you are right, there is so much unknown right now, and this is the one thing that annoys me about google. Always moving the goal posts!

I genuinly look forward to the day Google has a real competitor.

I worked for ages to boost about six keyphrases in backlinks. I ended up with about 3000 backlinks on one phrase - Mr cutts and co got antsy about it :(

@jamesosix - I dont think internal image descriptions /alts/tage are your problem - key word stuffing is when there is a wholr piece of text full of repeating or nonesensical keyphrases

Cheers guys and will email you later Jason. They always say its good to get outsiders thought and opinions, it could be something obvious, but we have come blind to it.

Appreciated :)

Penguin has been affected to bad links, stuffing, over optimised sites and ofcourse blackhat....

So guy stay away from such things...

Only one thing have to follow: Be Genuine to Search Engines and to Your Clients..!! It'll boost your growth and also your business..!! :)
