Should I be worried? Suggestions would be really appreciated

Hi there,

I've recently (21st March) launched a new website for a client. The website link is: <snipped> The main keywords that the client asked to focus on were:

  • Window Cleaning Cork
  • Window Cleaning Kerry

So the website isn't even up a month and the client has phoned me twice commenting that he isn't on the first page of the search engine for those keywords. He is positioned on page 3 for Window Cleaning Kerry but is not yet ranking for Window Cleaning Cork.

I suggested at the outset that I create a latest news page so that the client can keep the website up to date but that suggestion was rejected. Does anyone have any thoughts as to how I can improve the rankings or is it too soon to expect any results?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I've done a little keyword research into the two keywords and they're not very competitive, so it should be a piece of cake to rank for them.

On-page looks fine. I suspect it's off page that is the problem. You been building up backlinks? I've done a competitive analysis and there's only 2 websites on the first page which are going to give you any bother at all and to be honest, with some good link building, you'll out rank them.

Have you done anything with SEO on this website? Apart from content?

I disagree with you on this occasion Jason, sorry :p

The on site seo is terrible imo. The cufon font thing (which admittedly I have no experience with) appear as images? And the alt text behind them is just the word...so for example 'Window Cleaning..' google will just see "Window" and "cleaning" it wont see (to my knowledge) "Window cleaning".

The images I checked out also had no alt text or title text.

Pages generally don't have too much info on them. You are right that some of newsfeed/blog would help, but if he doesn't wanna do that, then imo its not your fault.

Your meta description looks a bit keyword stuffed too, but if that makes a noticeable difference I couldn't tell you.

Also, nothing to do with the seo side of things, but "your name" on the contact form is out of place.

Good luck :)

edit:

I dont get cufon fonts (yet), but the h1 does appear as a full string of text, so my bad on that front.

double edit:

Just read up on cufon fonts and google, and it shouldnt be an issue.

The file I've attached would suggest otherwise about on page SEO. I will add that it suggests a few more mentions of the keyword in the body text and H1 tag.

I agree that things need to be tidied up and a few tweaks here and there, but for such a keyword that you're aiming for (Clients suggestions I presume?) then those issues really shouldn't be of any problems to get you ranking atleast higher than you are.

Meta descriptions have absolutely no weight in terms of SEO, but they should be used to increase click through rate on the serps. Make them interesting so people want to click on them.

I would suggest that maybe look at increasing the content, like James as suggested. But I really think in this case, it's a matter of links to your website. I bet that one good, solid link from a good website or blog that has similar content on, then you'll climb the rankings.

I used my www.trand.co.uk website all the time to write up a post about clients work and using this to drop in a couple of links to their sites. I've seen pages rank on the first page of Google in 3 or 4 days for keywords that are considered competitive.

So my suggestion? Backlinks. Nothing spammy, nothing out the ordinary. Just solid backlinking.

PM if you want to talk about backlinking etc :)

Agreed on some points there with you Jason, it isn't bad on site seo per se, and it is a very low ranking keyword, that should be achievable with the site.

Another point to note is the domain. I hear Google would not differentiate between something like "fast cars" and "cars fast" (for example), however me personally, I like all things "uniform". Your domain is opposite to your focus keywords, however it would not be wise to change your content to fit "cork/kerry windowcleaning"..hmm..

Either way, I do agree your current site should be at least on the first page now.

I would personally do as Jason suggests:

More content (if possible, and the better quality the better the chance of a big improvement in SERP). I always find faqs/how-to's etc always add good natural content.

Find a good back link or two.

Do both of them and I reckon you will fly up to first page within a couple of weeks or so. :)

Best o' luck! :)

edit:

Another (more extreme, but more powerful way imo) would be to buy the domain, which your client has a bigger priority on out of:

Window Cleaning Cork

Window Cleaning Kerry

Then use that for the home of the site.

Google gives huge weight to domains with the keyword in.
