Need A Static IP Solution

Featured Replies

I have a dedicated server that is setup to only allow certain ip addresses to connect to FTP/WHM and Shell.

I have now noticed my ISP uses dynamic ip addresses which obviously is an issue.

Are there any services out there that I can use like a proxy that will have a static ip address? Initially just being able to access WHM via a web browser would be good enough, I just need to have a static ip solutions.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Can you set up the services to only allow access based on hostname instead of ip address?

If so, a free service like dyndns might be suitable (although I'm buggered if I can find the free service on their site!)

You should be able to set your internet ip type to static ip address in the administration panel. Based on my own experience, thats is how I do it.

The above method only works on ISPS which allow that, most force release after X amount of days normally after you lose your connection.

You have tons of ways to resolve this

1) Purchase a Static PRIVATE VPN

2) Purchase a Private Static Proxy, ones that do not rotate IPS every 30days

3) Free method #1, work out how your IP changes for example lets pretend my ip is

91.242.82.2

Every X amount of days my IP will be released, you should be able to find out how often your ISP releases your IP by the following ways, loggin into the router and look at the DNS and check the release date, many will include this, or ring your ISP and ask how often the IP is released back, and new one assigned (Most are 2 weeks). Once you know when your IP releases montier the range it switches too

For example, most ISPS will only rotate the last 2 numbers, 91.242.X.X X's being the new numbers so you could add an allow rule on 91.242.*.* of course this could open your machine to attack to other people within the same IP range but this is extremely unlikely.

4) Free Method #2, instead of adding a IP range add your domain record, for example many will look like this

91-242.92-2.bourne.virginmedia.com

bourne = Bournemouth would be the location you live in, normally they shorten it, so you could add something like this !@bourne.virginmedia.com again this means you could be attack by people in bournemouth only but again extremely unlikely.

5) Free Method #3 Properly secure your server, there is really no need to block IP's and Only allow some, Use TLS and use proper good passwords, if its a linux box you should disable root, and only enable keyless logins via secure keyfiles. This is by far the best method, using 2048bit keys, stops more hackers than blocking IPS.

Hope this helps
