From web designer to app developer?

Featured Replies

Hello peeps! I have just signed up to this forum and straight away have a question to ask. I am new to web design and have learned some basic html, css and javascript. I wondered if further down the line I would be in a place to get into app development? Just trying to figure out what my career options might be a few years from now. What skills would I need to broaden into app development? Many thanks! :)

For app development you either need the following:

- Xcode (if designing on OSX)

- a C++ editor and C++ Knowledge (if designing on a PC/Windows)

Both above being perfectly true, although you can also consider appcelerator which will convert PHP, HTML etc into platform specific code.. it like any such tool isn't 100% but is similar to the ethic at facebook etc allowing them 1 instace of facebook in 1 language to be converted inhouse (automatically) to platform spesific code.

Thanks guys. At the moment it is Android mobile apps that interest me. Is Java the only language I would need before I would be considered a complete Android developer. In other words are Android apps built using Java and only Java? Otherwise what else are they made up of? Any links would be welcome. Thanks! :)

you can also consider appcelerator

I would not recommend this personally

If you are serious about making apps you will need at least a mac mini

I've used apcelerator to make native iPhone apps using there javascript api. It's not too shabby!

Really? I'd heard it wasn't up to scratch - I'll check it out

Id go down the app route if I was to start now! Id pick a platform to work with and go with that rather than trying to be a jack of all trades. If you want something to focus on, go and create a decent mobile payment gateway ready for the next online shopping boom ;)

Yeah, I'm not going to say it's brilliant. There is a few "bugs". Overall, though; It's great for entry level app dev.

So i know HTML, CSS, PHP, some JS and jQuery. I recently downloaded the Android SDK and Eclipse to begin Java development. I greatly appreciated knowing PHP prior to starting this as it gave me a massive boost in understanding Java that bit better than someone brand new to programming. If your really interested but dont know were to start simply go to youtube and enter "thenewboston android development 1" that guy does a series of 200 tutorials also for iOS if you prefer it. Hopefully that will atleast give you a starting point, but its good if you already know IF's, Else's and switch/case before starting and understand the concept of OOP.
