I'm new to web design and currently halfway through developing my first website and I'm slightly confused about page navigation systems. My website will be dedicated to graphic design and will consist of some tutorials, wallpapers and other graphic design elements but whilst browsing through similar websites looking for inspiration I asked myself a question and didn't know the answer...

 

How do I force new content to be position on the first page (arranging content by newest first by default)?

 

I'm guessing the method of doing this will also be consistent for arranging by other orders also such as "most viewed" or "most downloaded". The only method I could think of would be to manually cut the content code from each page and place it onto one further back (which would take forever if you got ~100 pages) or simply changing the URLs (which would take almost forever). Surely there is a way of forcing the content to automatically update itself?

You meed a CMS. I suggest you look at WordPress, here's a tutorial on creating a theme.

As Renaissance said, this sounds like the perfect job for wordpress. You are effectively creating a simple blog.

Will I need to restart my entire mark-up and design or can it be easily edited so I can apply WordPress themes?

It's not that difficult to transfer it but I'd probably recommend starting from scratch so that you can follow the tutorial better and so that you design the site for wordpress. Submit the site itself though, it'd be great to critique and advise you on how best to 'convert' the site into wordpress!

I really don't want to have to start from scratch, I've spent the good half of my summer holidays designing, studying and coding in order to get this website done before I go back to college; but if I need to then I guess I don't have much choice.

 

So far I have downloaded and installed XAMPP & Wordpress and tbh, I hate it. It feel so linear and restricted but I guess it will open out more as I delve further in.

 

About "submitting my current website", how would I do this?

I do not currently have a web host as the site isn't complete and being on a student budget I don't have a great deal of money to waste buying hosting space without a website to even put on there. Is there a way I can demonstrate it to you with it's full functionality without a webhost?

I once again tried to use the wordpress but it doesn't seem to read my CSS, JS or Images - only my (X)HTML.

Is this the method I can use to solve my problem?

It will only really be for the "Blog" and "GFX" area of my website.

 

I'm not sure how to full submit the website with full functionality for critique/review so I took a screenshot of the "Home" and "GFX" pages so you can get a feel for the layout; if you can tell me how difficult it would be to "convert" this layout to a wordpress theme that would be great (note: the website is still under construction so the sections you see may be moved around a little such as the "advertisements" div on the "home" page).

 

Both images have been resized by the TinyPic from 1920x1080 to 1024x576 to save space/reduce loading times.
