We are going to buy our company domain for 5-10 years and host it on a VPS.

 

Can anyone recommend a relibilty company, costs are not an issue if the service is good.

Why on earth do you want to host it on a VPS?

 

You would be better off hosting on shared hosting (NON-Oversold) to get the most performance... Unless you have some special server requirements, although we often install things for people on shared servers too...

To be honest I need some advice on the best method of hosting.

 

At the minute we have our main wesbite hosted along with 13 sub domains.(media temple,grid service package)

 

We would like to have our main website hosted on its own.

 

We are a design agency but main area would be 3D visualisation, so we have lots of images on our site.

 

The site is currently around 1 GB in size with around 100 unquie visits per day.

 

Can you recommend a hosting package that woudl best suit our needs?

I would personally recommend using http://www.wizzvps.com/ as I have been using theme for more than a year now and never had any problems, they are really supportive when asking for advise and help on how to do things. Check out there packages. Im using WizzVPS:320MB Ubuntu 8.04 and host several sites with subdomains. Easy to use Plesk

I don't see a problem with hosting it on a VPS if you require full access and that extra stability and control. There are a few things you will need to decide on,

Do you require a control panel to navigate and control your server, the main Control Panels are Plesk and cPanel.

I'm guessing you're based in the UK (according to your profile) so I'd assume you want a UK based company with decent support.

Regarding your website, does the software you are running require a particular Operating System such as Windows?

Ideally, I would recommend you to go for a managed cpanel vps so that you get your own server resources and this will be beneficial when speaking in long terms and future growth.

 

Now, there are a couple of options, I would like to suggest.. You can either go for a shared hosting plan for now and later as your requirements demand more, upgrade to a vps. I would suggest to choose a company that offers flexible upgrade options in terms of hosting . That way, that company shall help you to migrate your data from shared to vps.

As mentioned above, you might need data migration during the upgrade. This is the only negative thing that I can think of int his case.

 

Other option, go with a vps directly from day 1, and you might not need to upgrade for quite a few years, unless your website traffic increase beyond your expectations.
