Hi, I know this is quite a dumb question for a web designer, but I am desperate for some help!

 

Basically, the company I work for have a web site and domain with 1and1, but have just bought a new hosting package with ehosting - when they bought the space, they paid to transfer they're domain.

 

I have been working on a new web site which someone has uploaded for me using the FTP details for the new space. (I know how FTP works and can see that it is uploaded) although, when I go to the domain, it still points to the old web site?

 

I'm sure it's just that i'm missing something really silly but would really appriciate any advice!

I think what you need to do is either to:

(i) Transfer the domain hosting or

(ii) Change the name servers to point to the new web hosting space

 

Is this a UK based domain, e.g. org.uk or co.uk?

 

If it is a UK domain, you'll need to change the IPS tag to the new domain host - they will inform you of this.

 

You should also find out from your domain host what their name servers are, however if they are domain hosting too, they may well update this automatically for you.

 

Once the domain hosting/naeservers have been changed, it can take up to 48 hours for this to take effect.

Out of interest, why didnt you first say this to either of the 2 web hosting companies involved, or the guy who did the uploading?

When buying the new hosting we paid to 'transfer the domain' - (im not exactly sure what this means) and it is a .com

 

Because we 'transfered' the domain, I assumed they would update it automatically... so I am thinking now maybe it is just because it takes upto 48 hours like you said.

thanks for your interest, answer is because I was slightly too embarrased as they assume I know all about this stuff!

Well if that's the case, the new domain host would need to have some level of authority to process a domain transfer. 1and1 will not transfer a domain simply on the basis of another hosting company contacting them to request this.

 

Only somebody who had access to your 1and1 hosting control panel would be able to do this. Or maybe an email from the owner to authorise it. So I wouldn't assume this. I would contact ehosting just to clarify whether a transfer has been processed. If it hasn't, you'll need to find out what information 1and1 require to process a transfer, gather this from ehosting, then put the request in to 1and1.
