I am just practising my design skills with fireworks by creating a dummy web portfolio site. Would appreciate your feedback and advice on how to improve things further.

I tried adding some Web 2.0 icons in the footer, but they really didnt suit my design, so i scrapped them.

Do I assume my design is so bad that noone wants to comment and I should scrap it completely?

It's not terrible mate - but it looks more like a wireframe than a finished site - you have no depth to it. Try adding some subtle gradients here and there to lift the design a bit; at the moment it is very flat and I think that is why few people are reviewing it.

 

People here (believe it or not lol) don't like to give negative feedback on the whole (unless someone comes in claiming they have the best site ever when it is terrible, but that isn't the case here)

 

I think it is a really good start. A solid structure, a nice colour scheme, some unique elements about it, it just needs some TLC on the finer details.

Thankyou for the feedback, thats just the kind of advice I was looking for. Funny you mention subtle gradients though because the logo, tabs and text box labels actually have gradients on them already....but maybe they are TOO subtle. So I will try to adjust these and also maybe add some texture to the background.

Really pleased you like the colour scheme because I spent alot of time trying to decide on colours that worked together well, but werent too strong.

I will work on adding some further details and post back with the changes. Once again thankyou so much for the valuable feedback.

Agreed on the colour scheme, although I'm not quite sure whether the white fits. Still, it's very original, which is a hard thing to find these days, so congrats on that!

 

Otherwise, try something a bit more adventurous on the typography front, and add some graphics

how about a little texture and a subtle middle linear gradient?

 

you could substitute my cross-hatch with a tyre track type thing

My problem is I experimented with lots of really nice more interesting fonts, but none of them looked as good/were as eligible at 14pt. I could in theory make the whole logo longer to incorporate a larger more interesting font, but i'm not sure a larger logo will work with the design, I will have to experiment.

I beg to differ. I think a larger logo would definitely work...have a play around

Changed the logo, plus added a few other details, once again would appreciate the feedback.

Not sure what else I can add to it really.

 

So do you think its a good enough design to have a go at coding it, or does it need more work or shall I perhaps start a new design completely and leave this one down to part of the learning curve?
