This is a very literal question, as this is really the furthest I have got with a website. Is there such a thing as free backlinks that google to not 'frown upon' and what are the options available.

Sure - forums, blog comments, directories, article submission sites... they're all free and certainly won't be frowned upon by google

what are the things that are frowed upon? sorry, i'm a bit of a noob at seo still.

And most of blogs got nofollow links - I think they not worth to much or even nothing...

Its better to link on do follow sites,.usually you can build links in a natural way like blog commenting, social bookmarking, profile linking and other link building techniques as long as it is not like link farming or spamming..

Start with directories then after social bookmarkin and forum posting ,artical submission etc

blogs and forums are usually nofollow (at least the good ones are anyway).

 

Avoid link farms.

 

Join directories that are found high in Google searches, that don't have hundreds of external links per page and certainly not on the homepage. Also check a few of the websites listed, if they look poor quality and have lots of outgoing links the directory should be avoided.

Try social bookmarking sites. I find that they work for bringing in traffic. Also, I would try to visit similar blogs or sites and post comments.Also Article Submission is good to bringing lots of traffic as well as backlinks.
