I am a noobie to the website - apologies if the question has been asked a million times which i am sure it will have been.

 

I'm a web designer & my next project will be very challenging as its a ecommerce and I have never done this sort of work before but it's too much of a good opportunity to pass up

 

I will be doing the design from scratch and the checkout page / cart pages need to look consistent with the rest of the website in terms of colours and banners text and so forth - my question is which cart is the best to use? As i said, I am a complete beginner with carts but I am excited about this opportunity and ready for the challenge!

 

The online store is going to be based on clothing so there will be different categories / brands / gender / ages etc

 

Any help would be fantastic - no doubt I will need quite abit of help off you guys if possible

The first step is to find a shopping cart system that's going to be right for your client and their business needs. To to this you need to get as much information from your client as possible then locate a few carts that fit the bill. See the list of carts link in my sig, there are dozens listed there.

 

Most carts run on HTML/CSS based templates anyway so they're easily customisable, what you really should be looking at are things like ease of use (for your client), features, payment methods and so on.

Hi, im in the same situation as you. Ive been asked by my mum to create a online store for her horse shop she opened last year. I did a home study course but they went bust so lost a lot of money so had to go local college. Done mostly dreamweaver and flash but they dont tell u anything bout shopping carts etc.

I dont even know where to begin, i can get photos, prices etc but do i design the site and then get a shopping cart, how do i apply it to my design or do i get that 1st. so many questions.

Morw important than the script is finding a hosting partner who will look after you all the way and be there when you need help. This way if you break anything you will have someone to put it back together.
