Would appreciate some honest feedback (I won't take offence) for a new design I'm mulling over for my personal site. Basically trying to expand my design skills. Here's a screenshot.

The header looks a tad plain, maybe spicing up the nav links would give it a bit more oomph? And you've gotta have an image of a "sponge" in there - "Soaking up standards"!!!

 

Probably a bit more padding on the left side so the text isn't quite as close the the edge?

 

The footer surprised me with the white background, kinda looks a bit odd. Maybe a slightly darker grey than the main content area?

 

The blue edge on the main content makes my eyes go a bit squidy, try plain white or a shadow

 

But I love the swirly bits!

I think it looks great and I love the name sponge project. Sponge project is a very memorable name and the layout is easy on the eyes. I don't know anything about web design so my opinion is from a reader stand point and I think it is great!! Keep it up!

I like the overall design.

 

Nice header, but I second bluedreamer's suggestion of maybe doing something with the nav-links. At the moment they ,erge with the space of the logo which makes the space underneath the logo look bottom heavy. Maybe separating the items..? Or maybe introduce some of them organic elements you've got going there. I really liked them.

 

And I also ditto bluedreamer on the left padding.

 

Let us know when we can see a live example to poke and destroy*.

I third the more interesting navigation links and the padding.

 

I also think that a drop shadow would look better than the blue border.

 

I love the background and the swirlies, and also the colour combination... very nice!

Good stuff guys. I've re-done it slightly (added spit and polish really), tidied up the code and added some skip links. Demo is here.

I've never seen a header with a hover like that before!

 

Personally, I would say bigger margins, more space between the page edge and the text, but I think its a personal preference thing. I like big margins!

Oh yes, that spit and polish works a treat, good job.

 

If I'm picky...

 

Maybe a slight border at the top of the footer

"Intro" text is a bit in yer face and hard to read, maybe needs to be not bold?

Yes, the nav-bar looks fine now. The background colour was all it needed. Though I still ditto the request for more white-space.

Ooh, a k10k pattern. Don't they just have the cutest lil' things there?

 

I think the navigation bar needs some work. It looks more like a horizontal list of links, rather than an actual navigation bar. How about experimenting with borders / background colours rather than just having the text underlined?

 

It's nice that your emphasised text is a different colour, but they look too much like the links in your text. Unless... maybe I'm not understanding it properly. Maybe all the blue text in the page is linked? I'm not sure.

 

Apart from that and a couple other little things, it looks pretty good! Well done.
