July 28, 201016 yr Hi all, Opinions please, good and most definatly bad, all suggestions most welcome as we are always looking to improve things, it is a fairly new site and was done by my business partner, neither of us have experience doing this type of thing so please let me know your thoughts. http://www.omegatesting.co.uk/Home.html Cheers Shawn
July 28, 201016 yr Hi Shawn, It's a good attempt as neither of you actually do this sort of thing, but there are a lot of areas that could do with work. - There are a lot of images that slow the site down. - It's not that user friendly design wise, making it finicky for users to get around the site. The logo also changes on the sub pages, compared to the homepage. - The design it self looks really 'homemade' - You have also tucked away clients and testimonials on its own page, where those big clients could be utilised on your homepage. Problem with DIY sites, is if you dont know what your doing your always going to end up with a pretty basic site that isn't greatly designed. I would always recommend going to someone who know's what their doing, but then again money is always an issue right now. But if you can afford it, hire a pro.
July 28, 201016 yr It has it's moments. The front page doesn't look too bad. CSS can do the navigation rollovers far, far better than images. PDF's and external links should open in a new tab/page. There's big empty spaces at the end of each page. Why is the 247 highlighted? I wouldn't use Quicktime for video. Business' especially may not have it installed on their pcs. If it's a first dig, it's not a bad attempt. But it does need work.
July 28, 201016 yr Author it's bad. Why didn't you dire anyone to do it? Socreative - I know i wanted the truth but would it have hurt to give a bit of creative criticism, saying "its bad" doesnt say which parts, fair enough maybe its all bad but points for improvement would help us greatly. As for hiring someone to do it, well its all down to money as Adamjhunt said. Thanks for the replies, as for the amount of pics, we felt it was a bit empty without them and thought people would like a visable image of what they where loking for. We are trying to get a proper logo hence why thats an area thats not too great at present. What makes it finicky to navigate? What could we do with the design to make it look less homemade? CCS means nothing to me, i have seen it mention on here in alot of threads but i dont know what it does? Totally agree with the PDF's opening in a new window, the amount of times ive thought a new window opened up and i closed the pdf to find i'd lost the site completely We are aware of the big white spaces at the bottoma nd will get rid asap 247 is highlighted due to us offering a 24hr 7day a week service, although having looked at the site today it doesnt make that clear at all. How would you go about the video/slideshow without quicktime? Thanks again for all the points you have raised. Shawn
August 3, 201016 yr i have seen worse for first attempt you could keep playing, tweaking and learning but i would also look into paying someone to start from scratch.
August 5, 201016 yr It's not bad for a new-comer mate! Keep trying, one thing i do recommend is align things up better, such as the nav bar at the top and the content box.
August 7, 201016 yr I've seen much worse from people who have tried a lot harder, so you've done well! Not too keen on the big gap down the middle, would look quite a bit better without that I think. Also, on my small 1024 x 768 monitor at work, I get side scroll bars, even though the content fits fine; so I'm scrolling over white space, which shouldn't be happening. Not too sure what's causing that, and I don't have time to look at your code at the moment unfortunately. Great start though mate.
August 10, 201016 yr Hi, It's a good begging, but your site needs some work. First of all, it takes sooo much to load it. Look for web page optimization on the web, you will find some awesome tips. Second, work on your design. make it clearer, and objective. Easy to use, and easy for the client to find the information they are looking for. maybe hire some professional to do it for you. Having a good design can drasticaly change the way people see your service. Have good information and your website will look great and increase your income. good luck.
August 26, 201015 yr Author Thank for all the replies guys good and bad. We have made some changes to the site, any further thoughts??
August 26, 201015 yr I actually quite like the design. I think that if it was all formatted correctly with a couple of tweaks to it it would look really great. I dont really like the marquee going on I think there are probably better ways to animate that and draw attention to that information. I would also add a x running background so that your navigation bar doesnt stand alone in the middle of the page or close it off with some rounded corners. I would also add a very light grey gradient underneith the navigation as I think the logo on the white looks a bit plain for the sleek design I think your going for.
