I've had abit of a funny idea! A friend and I were discussing religion etc. and she'd made a comment about how frustrating it was that she'd been baptised at such a young age and there was in practice nothing she could do, to have it "renounced" or "revoked". As an Athiest myself I was inclined to agree, which made me recall that case of the doctor who made his revocation a matter of public record by having it printed in the paper and (eventually) after a long struggle managed to have it placed alongside the record of his baptism at his local church. However, apart from that, which is clearly a long, difficult and drawn out affair, there seems to be no method of renouncing your baptism/religion.

 

Nonetheless, being the insightful guy as I am, I had abit of a revelation.

 

What's to stop someone setting up a private/commercial website whereby an individual can fill out a form with their full name, county of birth, county of baptism, date of birth, date of baptism etc. etc. press a button, and have it recorded as a matter of public record that they renounce it?

 

It seems quite an original idea, and as far as I can see, nothing of similar nature exists?

Albeit Controversial, it seems like quite a novel proposal, what does everyone else think?

Sounds interesting, but as someone who was baptised and is now an Athiest, I wouldn't bother to put my name down on some website, I just simply follow my beliefs. Baptised or not, if I don't believe in a god, then that is my choice.

 

It is an interesting idea and I am sure you would come under fire from a lot of religious nut-jobs. It could be a press-haven though, you may find yourself getting loads of coverage from the press if it is handled correctly

Not sure about it being an entirely "viable" business model myself though. On one hand, I suppose those who feel strongly enough about their views might be happy to pay 99p for the privilege of saying "Yeah! so there!" then again as you said the religious nut jobs might not be entirely happy with it. As said, it could easily be seen as a very controversial product. To tell you the truth, I constructed a simple system over the weekend that would work, not sure If I should publish it though!

Anyway, i've taken your advice and that of others on board and i've decided to release an alpha/beta level functioning system for use, and I'll take it to a full version if it gathers enough interest. It's going to be free with the ability to make an optional donation if so one desires.

 

I'll let you know in the next couple of days when it's up for a mooch around.

At this stage i'm not bothering with a design, basic white background and plain text should cover it. lmao!

I think this is a fantastic idea! Gives a lot more people peace of mind that they have proof their baptism is renounced.

Ok well, i've got it functioning right, perhaps you'd like to take a look? I've kept everything (design etc.) on the low down and basic as it's only a preliminary but if it generates enough interest I might consider moving it further!

Nothing at all in practice, there's nothing to stop anyone doing that. Kind of difficult to stop, just like using someone elses details to signup for something else. So yeah, that's certainly a problem alright!
