Please forgive my ignorance but I've never really used a cms before.

 

When we learn design we are all taught the basics css, xhtml, mysql and php oh and javascript but no one ever mentioned cms. Only now when I'm thinking about doing sites for customers am I thinking about what to use.

 

Regardless of what I select (I've installed modx on my local drive) Would you guys use the cms for every customer? and also would I design as normal (before using cms) within the cms, you know using the technologies stated, css etc.

 

I just feel a little confused, I always like to have a rough guide as to how and when to use something.

 

So what's your experience . . . I'd appreciate your input. Thanks

I would only use a CMS if the customer needs or wants to update the site themselves. You'll probably find that more and more customers expect this as standard nowadays, but it's certainly not a requirement.

I wouldn't implement it for every customer, only for those that specifically request it as not everyone wants to or feels comfortable updating their own website. Some of my customers have asked for a CMS but then never actually used it whereas others see it as a necessity.

If it's a site that is updated by you for your client it's worth considering a CMS even if they didn't request it. This often makes your job a lot easier because you can usually update things a lot quicker.
