I have self-learnt (X)HTML & CSS and have some websites under my belt and wonder what I should learn next in website design/development?

 

PHP? Mysql?

 

I don't use Dreamweaver but hand code.

 

Your opinions would be gratefully received.

Are you currently employed? If not try and get into a company as a junior, this will help you alot and then the company will also help you in terms of what skills are required.

 

Maybe even get an online portfolio up.

 

Might be worth looking into a design program, Photoshop, Fireworks or Gimp?

What do you like more, what is more appropriate for you — design or development?

Try Javascript and JQuery. Will add some good front end skills to your arsenal!

 

Also, PHP and MYSQL would be good too.

Well, I think people generally learn PHP and SQL. They go together like peas in a pod. It depends what you want to go into. If you want to design, begin your life as a perfectionist with Photoshop. If you're more of a code enthusiast, go down the endless path of PHP.

If you like both, I'd suggest sticking to the Photoshop, creating some templates for Wordpress or Drupal whilst at the same time creating some widgets or plugins for your chosen platform.

cool, maybe your current employer will be able to help you with your next step in regards to progressing with your career, development and skill set.

Learning more code than CSS & HTML takes you out of the designer role and more into development. So it really depends on what you enjoy more. I'm a designer and not interested in learning anymore code than css html and a bit of jquery. They way I see it is the time I could spend learning php ect is better spent furthering my current skills in photoshop, flash, html and css to be a better designer. So it's really up to you and what area you want to move into.
