Sorry if this is the wrong section, seemed to be the correct place for this being that its about CSS.

 

I am just curious how everyone started in learning CSS?

I have been doing html for YEARS and I am happy to move into CSS as I am recently getting back into the game of web design.

 

But how did you start? An online tutorial? A book? A class? Viewing source and figuring it out?

 

please share.. I soak up information quickly, but would like to find a more efficient way of learning CSS other than saving someones site to my computer and playing with the code to see how it works.. as I learn stuff but don't understand everything I am doing. So I hope you will share some ideas on how to learn CSS more quickly.. it all seems rather simple for the most part so I am thinking a book will work good.. but I am not sure which one.

Hurray, a CSS question I am more than qualified to answer.

 

Firstly Evsoul, hello there. I have only started learning CSS around 3 months ago so am still very new to this. I have spent money on DVD's Books etc etc but feel there is no one solution.

 

The best start I actually made was following this sites beginners guides here, best on the net IMO. http://www.html.net/tutorials/css/

 

Whilst there far from prefect or complete I feel this give you a grounding so you at least have half a clue what everyone else is talking about when they are offering advice.

 

A great DVD I bought from Lynda.com is CSS by Eric Myers. A lot more advanced than the tutorial but after the tutorial the DVD makes sense.

 

I am working my way now through a very simple test site here www.1stkreative.co.uk Its one thing learning about stuff but doing it is where I start to learn.

Didn't you see my post? Sort of explains what got me going etc in detail.

That took me back. I first started in 1999 when browser CSS support was just starting to happen. You couldn't do much back then so it was mainly restricted for formatting fonts, text sizes, colours and borders. I basically learnt using my first HTML editor which had excellent CSS tools built in.

I also just bought the book "beginning web programming with HTML, XHTML, and CSS for $15 and its a huuge book.. i can skip the HTML crap and go right to the CSS/XHTML stuff.

 

I decided to pick up a PHP/mysql book too.. just cause we should all know that stuff.

CSS Zen Garden convinced me once and for all that CSS is the way forward. Once you get the basics right (books are a good start) then just play around, either professionally or for yourself. This I find helped developed various skills and new methods.

 

For me I started in 2003/4. I was in the marketing team of a portal and we had a team of dedicated Web Devs as part of that team. Basically one guys started helping me out and it grew from there. At one point some idiot gave me FTP access ot the live site and I was updating my own content!

Zen Garden showed me the right way too. I saw some pages out there and I said to myself "i want to code sites this way".

 

I've learned looking at source code from Zen and other css based sites. Google was also a big help.

My first point of call was Craig Grannels book 'Web Designers Reference-XHTML & CSS'.

The Lynda.com video tutorial 'CSS for Designers' with Andy Clarke & Molly E. Holzschlag

really made things clear with CSS for me.
