Bump - Surely some expert web designer on here has come across this before? Internet Radio for one uses huge files. My files are 45 mins long not 60 as previously stated.

Cant I stream using something like real player? Cant you set the buffer. IE, so it doesn't have to load the whole 1 hour in and only load up say 15 seconds or so in advance before it starts to play?

Hi, I am currently working on a site for a client. The site is dedicated to an old defunct dance music radio station. I need to learn how I go about letting people listen too but not directly download huge one hour chunks of audio file. It would be best if site users could have some sort of slider to shift about to jump to different parts of the audio file. IE, if you want to listen to the 50 min bit you dont want to have to wait 50 mins till it plays. Anyone any suggestions how I do this?

Hi Nathan. I am sure a dedicated uni course far from home would be superb but as said my circumstances do not offer me such an option.

lol, this makes me laugh. A mate of mine studied an A+ qualification to qualify him as a Computer Tech. He spent most of the course learning about Dos and Win 95 and this was last year!! Apparently they have updated the course this year. Im guessing they now cover 98 as well I doubt Ill be going the course route are what both of you have said.

No, it inst what I wanted to hear but if this is the case then better I know now than after investing time in something useless to me. I have been following the Book / Linda.com DVD / Forum approach. As said I am progressing but you dont half hit some dead ends and never seem to find any ways out of them. Then accomplished people on forums with the best will in the world forget what it is like to be an utter newbie. They describe in terms what is simple to themselves but is nothing short of way over my head. This inst meant as an insult. I am now at the stage due to my years of graphic design and fluency with Fireworks where I can design then slice and dice and make a very attractive looking template / web site. I can also write lean code for such a site but these sites could only be a brochure type sites (IE 6 pages of nothing but info) and not anything near Ecommerce or database driven. Perhaps I am expecting far too much too soon as designing a decent Brochure style site in 4 months ago isnt too bad. Another bad thing about forums is some people say total opposites to others. This was made apparent recently when I made my site work fine in FF and then began work to get it to work in IE (as originally instructed is the best way.) This now is the wrong way. Then I used a file / workaround / hack called 'Whatever:hover' to get my menus to work in IE6. Again, what I was initially told to do, but now this is also considered evil. I mean, who do you listen too?? Also, Im yet to find a book on getting your site to work in a globally dominating MS browser Thanks for letting me know these courses aren't worth it Eris. I have a graphics designer for many years now. I want to incorporate web design in with this and so about four month ago started to lean XHTML and CSS. I am quite pleased with the progress I have mead in just a few month re hand coding. However when your self taught there are always gaps in your knowledge as you cant learn what you don't know even exists. Sometimes for these reasons alone following a curriculum is a good idea. So what the answer, jump back into college. Might be great if your a teenager and live with your mam and dad. For me those days are long gone. Im 34 with a wife, daughter, dog, £900 mortgage a month etc etc. I have found a few 'study at home' type courses but dont really know what I am looking for. I would really appreciate some help in what would be the best in making me an accomplished designer. How you gonna get IE6 to obey the hover command then? Please, Id be interested as I can't find a way other than downloading additional files to place on my server. I must have missed something. You quoted my whole post saying don't build a site this way. Do you also disagree about building your site for FF first and then IE?

Hi cuzo. Im quite new to web design but only hand code. I wouldn't rely on DW or any other software. If they were any good at writing code for you no one would need to hand code and this isn't the case. Also, from what Ive learned. IE6 is the devil spawn and IE 7 is half as bad. Always make your site so it works good in FF and then use hacks or whatever workarounds you have to to get IE to display your sight correctly.

Hi Eris, Ive tried all options but for me think you really cant beat cute FTP and I am the tightest man alive. Shame I can't work out DW's built in FTP.

I use DW to hand code and have it set so when I do some coding and press save it saves via ftp to my server directly. Probs are arising as there seems no simple way to put new images into my images folder on my server, so if I update graphics in fireworks I can only export them to my own home PC. How do I get them from my PC to my server using DW? I thought a simple drag and drop onto the FTP section of the files tab would do it. It doesn't. I can do this no probs with cute FTP but would rather use DW for this purpose as it save buying extra software for the sake of it.
