Just wondering what software you would use for different scale projects, for example i have been doing some reading and found that magento, openCart and ZenCart are the most common and recommended software to use.

 

For a full scale ecommerce sites with lots of products and categories etc i gather that Magento would be the best option?

 

If a site requires a simple checkout, eg creating a review/recommendation website that requires customers to pay an annual fee to place their add on the site, what would be best to use to achieve this? Like it would have different membership options, eg if you want a full page description with images, link etc.

 

And on checkout it would record all their information etc?

That really depends on the scale of the project, if you're going really big you'll probably end up using IBM Websphere (one of the most commonly used ecommerce platorms), conversely the other end of the spectrum is something like basic Paypal payments.

 

It's not a good idea to "just use what everyone else is using", instead you really need to write out a comprehensive wish list of features that the business inquestion needs to conduct their business online, then find the most appropriate solution from that. You've always got to consider the people who will be managing the shop as well - will they understand how to manage from the cart admin interface? will they need extra training and support?

 

Another thing is support. If the shopping cart goes tits up and you can't fix it, who will?

Thanks for the replies, I was looking at finding out how I would integrate a payment method for my website : static web page design, where I have 3 package options 4 page, 7 page and 10 page package options with optional additional extras you can add on to each package such as Logo design, Sliders etc. The higher the package you choose eg 10 page package the more features that are included as standard. Then the ability to write down their details, such as name, address, additional info, message etc.

 

What would be a good option to use in the above case so customers can pay me on-line as well as submitting their info at the same time?

 

Would something like ZenCart or OpenCart be of use here?

That's all pretty straightforward stuff. You'll need a cart that can recalculate price based on various options your set up, most carts handle this so Zen or Opencart might be ok - why not download, install and test them to see which one fits your way of working?

I will look into them two options then, thanks for your advise. I guess magento would not be suitable for this and only for big projects? I will check them out, which in your opinion is best out of Zen or OpenCart?

i really like wp e-commerce. it's a free plugin for wordpress and it's pretty damn sweet. check it out. plus there are loads of videos showing you how to use it. incuding a video that shows you how to install wordpress itself, add a theme and add the plugin and put up a product to sell IN 5 MINUTES!!!!!!

I think magento is best..

Magento commerce is easy to install with additional layouts and magento plugin. Unlike other open source shopping carts magento does not require e-store owners to have prior programming experience. It is undoubtedly simplistic and powerful..
