Could you guys tell me what you think of the two layouts I drew up? The pictures and icons will be replaced later with ones that I make myself and which will be more suitable for the site. But the general theme of the pictures and icons will be the same. The target audience is foreigners who are in Korea and wish to cook non-Korean food using ingredients found in Korea.

 

This is my first try at a website. I have been studying web programming languages for the last 6 months, and design for the last 2 months and feel it would serve me better to put what I learned to use while continuing my studies. They are very much in the first draft stages.

I like both your layouts. However, I think the second one is more successful simply because it has more text. In the first layout, visitors can tell what information they will find when they click on the images, whereas in the second layout, it is unclear whether what they click will be an article, a recipe, a video, etc. Of course, perhaps this would be solved with some kind of mouse-over text. It is difficult to tell from just an image.

 

Since they're just images, next I can only comment on the aesthetics of each -

 

I would say that the first layout is more dramatic, the second a better fusion of form a function. The first layout has a more slick, modern, and professional feel, while the second layout feels more down-to-earth and homey. You could pick either one depending on what preferences your target audience might have (people traveling might just want a quick-loading, simple site to find some fast recipes and might not care about how slick your site looks).

 

Just some things to consider, if you have any rough drafts of code it'd be very helpful to further critique your designs. They're definitely a great start though, they are both very visually appealing. Good luck!

Layout8 : the background is really good. font style is really simple.

and layout7 : I like the logo. and the layout is well formatted.

I'm creating the code for layout7. It's taking awhile as I prefer to do everything myself and not use any plugins, mostly so I can put my programming knowledge to use.

 

The hardest part is finding free icons and pictures that fit the look and color scheme of my layouts.

I think it depends on the audience you are after. Both are very good designs, but darker design looks like a more modern style of food, whilst the beige design looks like it would show more classic dishes.
