Just a quite simple question (I say that now???)

 

I’m new to all this (well about 9 months and when I’m not working 12 hour days in my norm job)

 

When you save for web in Photoshop you get the option for download estimates, now I know these are going to be very "estimated" but... what do you use for yours (i.e. the default is 52k....does anyone still have a 52k mod)

 

At the moment I am thinking (don’t laugh) that most should really have a 1mb min cable so I use 512kbps as my estimate time comparison? (Halved it so I can make up for other things etc)

 

Any views?

You shouldn't be using that 'Save for web' option anymore.

 

You should use HTML & CSS to markup your site, carefully slicing your Photoshop design to use as images. This will massively reduce your download times as you can repeat images etc..

Generally I don't even look at that part when I'm using ps. I simply reduce the quality as low as the image can bear and still look clean and colourful, then save it.

I was just talking about the quality; like a big picture for a full background.

 

Don’t use the HTML etc from PS as I use an external style sheet.

I understand what you mean but I’m still getting my eye to be as “keen” as others

I guess I need to use it to get near the size then use my eye to get me 100% happy.

i usually look at file size and try to balance it (as said above) and so the whole page weighs in at less than 150k (includes all code, js, images,css, etc) and optimise less important images more aggressively. big picture for a full background is always tricky as it needs to be prohibitively huge if its a photo (to cover all resolutions), or it needs to repeat or fade into a solid css background colour

it was a big picture of a high way (road) and the fade out looked weired, thats why i was asking - thanks for the reply.

 

I guess im not gonna use a who pic for a BG everytime so not to stress to much.
