March 25, 201016 yr I have performed an experiment for a fairly competitive search on Google ‘professional website design’. As you can see from the results you are going to find it difficult to enter the top 10 with a young site. So the question is, what is more important domain age or backlink age? Domain name > Backlinks > Domain age 1. www.addictivity.com 13384 11 years 2. www.mackins.co.uk 31845 11 years 3. www.webcreationuk.com 144336 5 years 4. www.designprofessional.co.uk 1956 7 years 5. www.allwebservices.co.uk 6535 6 years 6. www.onlinedesignuk.co.uk 5677 10 years 7. www.empire-elements.co.uk 15888 7 years 8. www.toucher.co.uk 8207 8 years 9. www.stevesims.com 41645 7 years 10. www.sussexwebsitedesign.com 5527 1 year 11. www.web-source.net 20579 11 years 12. www.turbowebdesign.co.uk 31391 5 years 13. www.digitaltouch.co.uk 19179 6 years 14. www.webnetinteractive.com 3107 5 years 15. www.websposure.co.uk 1263 6 years
March 25, 201016 yr Neither, it's the content that matters. Have relevant content and you will display higher. Also backlinks are to do with quality rather than quantity, 10 links from other "professional web design" websites are loads better than 1000 links from a football website. Domain age will be factored in due to it having lots of relevant links and Google can recognise that it is an established website. Using the right content, and the right backlinks will improve your rankings.

Domain age will be factored in due to it having lots of relevant links and Google can recognise that it is an established website. Using the right content, and the right backlinks will improve your rankings. Although content is exceptionally important, content alone will not get your site placed at the top of a very competitive search especially with Google. My understanding is that Google can read the content analysing the grammar, spelling, keywords, and decide if a good level of english has been used, but Google has not got a human brain and as clever as the Google algorithm is, it cannot decide if this is a really good and useful resource by itself. Google uses backlinks to verify whether the site is important. This is the one factor that no developer can directly alter and is used to decide how important a site is. The more backlinks to a site, the higher the site will ultimately go. Going back to my original question about backlink age. The reason why I have mentioned this is because I think it is very under estimated. The longer amount of time a backlink is connected to your site, the more authority your site will gain from it. I myself, have a site that had a sudden drop in Google despite my alway increasing rankings and could not figure out why, as I had not changed my content. Then I realised that although I have not changed anything on my site, I had asked a lot of my members to change my backlink text destoying the age that they had created. I do agree with you on relevant links and is proberbly the reason why my site is number 10 on that list despite being at least 5 times younger than any other!
March 25, 201016 yr This is a really interesting observation, especially as you went down in rank doing something that most SEOs would advise you to do. Maybe there is something in it. It makes sense that backlink age would make a difference. Domain age really doesn't make that much difference. I've had brand new sites ranking on the 1st page of Google for competitive phrases within 6 months. It's one of the algorithms that Google uses, but it doesn't rely heavily on it. Thanks for sharing your observations. I'll be watching out for that!
April 7, 201016 yr Hello Neil nice to see you on here !!!! I hope you are doing well in your business... I can say that "professional website design" or "professional web design" was a big key phrase going back 4-5 years ago but all things change these are not good key phrases any more as you dont get any traffic. We get more traffic for "website design" being on page 6 at the moment. Not unless Google analytics is telling us porkies but i doubt that lol. But going back to the subject i think you only need to link to the 2 big directories dmoz and yahoo. Get quality backlinks (one way) Link exchanges give little value. A good way to get links is to do a "101 things Article" People likes these and like to publish them on there blogs etc...
April 7, 201016 yr Author Hi, Its good to see one of my best members on here. I agree with you in that the term Professional Web Design does not bring in a large amount of traffic. That is why I have filled my site with quality content to be found on a variety of searches. Like you I am also targeting the terms like 'web design', 'website design' and got in the first 100 within my first year and also got in the first 30 for website designers, and 'desingers' as well. Hopefully I can get a lot higher in year two and drive more clients your way! Keep in touch.
April 8, 201016 yr Yes i wish you luck that will be good i know its not cheap but putting your site on yahoo directory will help you a great deal. Im hoping to include my site in yahoo within the next 2 months.

Link juice(it shows up in the first page or two of Google or Yahoo, for instance, many more people are likely to visit your site) is comprised of 3 values: Relevancy, PageRank, and Trust. Trust is earned over time, so aged backlinks have earned more Trust by having stood the test of time.Domain age is an important factor in SEO for your Google ranking. Among the hundreds of weighting factors that Google considers in determining how to rank search engine results is the age of your domain .Sites are significantly devalued for the first few months after Google first discovers them. It is extremely challenging to rank well for competitive terms in those first few months. In fact, some SEO professionals simply won’t work with brand new domains ..So domain age is more important ..You can check the domain age by the site Whoisxy.com and domain detail. August 30, 201312 yr Domain Age and back link age both the terms are equally beneficial and have their own significance and quality.Established domains with a credible web presence and the age factor undoubtedly improve the SEO ranking and back link age also give boost to website ranking.

My website is young at that time - only 1 year old while my competitors' websites have more than 3 years old. However, my website ranks higher because my contents are more relevant.
September 12, 201312 yr Author I agree with what you said. I have promoted a keyword before. My website is young at that time - only 1 year old while my competitors' websites have more than 3 years old. However, my website ranks higher because my contents are more relevant. Wow, this is a super old topic. I achieve the same the same thing with my directory back then, that's why was interested, however the age of a domain can certainly do no harm. If your doing well at this stage then I'm sure only more traffic will come. Well done!
September 12, 201312 yr It's an old topic, I know but I can't help chucking my oar in when I see "Neither matters, it's content". No offence, but it's not. A website will never, EVER rank without backlinks. EVER. It just doesn't work like that, thats not how PageRank works, thats not how search engines work. Domain age is one of the many, many factors that Google check against. But a website that is 1 month old can out rank a website that is 11 years old no problem.
September 12, 201312 yr Author Now there's a face I haven't seen for a while. Glad to back on the directory and see your still hear Jason. Totally agree with what your saying and at the end of the day you can do all you like with on page SEO (which will help), and domain age helps too. But once you have got that right it is of course the backlinks that sets the big boys apart from the rest! Backlinks are easy enough to get, but its the decent ones that are tough. I mean you have really got to create or write something special for respectable sites to link to you, and even then, on top of that you have got to work crazy hard on those social media sites to get them to notice. There are very few websites were you can get a decent backlink from a website related to your own.
September 18, 201312 yr Domain age is might be one factor out of 200 hundred ranking factors of Google algorithm. If you have new site you have to make efforts for getting unique links for your site. This should be coming from high PR site of your niche. You will get ranking after a while. Edited September 18, 201312 yr by Jmarton1
