Well obviously before I start out professionally I will need some examples of my work, but I really don't know how I can expand my Portfolio, do I offer cheap Web Design services or do I offer to design some free stuff for a few people?

I think you can do a bit of both. What I like to do as well is take an existing brand, or even a website, and act as if I was hired to create a website for them.

A nice way to build up your portfolio is to approach a local charity or not for profit organisation and make a site for them. It has a certain kind of credibility about it which looks good I think.

Thanks, that's a good idea. For one thing there is a local property business (not exactly a charity lol), the owner is a good friend of my parents and is always complaining about his website, I could offer to design it anew for free, I'd need the current PHP files though.

Thanks for your reply too, though it might look a little weird though showing your design in a portfolio when it isn't on the actual website.

I don't think this is the best idea... Not 100% sure about the legality here, using a big companies logo in your design could be misrepresentation and they could get ticked off for having a design associated with them that isn't up to their usual professional standard.

Just make sure they don't take the pi** - cause you ain't a charity!

It is a great idea, but I don't know any local charities, nor would I be able to converse with them (I'm in Spain, don't speak fluent Spanish, not only that but I'm in a town of only 3000 people and I don't think there are any local charities), but I could search for some charities from my old town in England.

How about design competition sites like 99 designs, the briefs are realistic even if you never officially enter your design.
