Working online!

Featured Replies

I am wanting to work online. I'm currently brushing up on my HTML / CSS whilst also moving onto Javascript. I am wanting to work freelance.

I am just wondering, could I learn to be a freelance website developer as well as be a freelance writer online and do both jobs? Or would my workload be too big?

On average, how many hours per day do freelance website developers work?

Bump, anyone know anything about this?

Anyone wanting to start their own business needs to be prepared to put every spare minute into it especially at the moment. It takes a lot of sacrifice. Mike and I just don't have a life at the moment but at least we work together!

I'm only 18 so what you're about to read isn't be coming from the most experienced of 'freelancers', I'm just replying since you bumped ;)

I've had 2 clients in the past month or so; one was a very simple slice and code job for someone who had a PSD, the other was a slightly larger Wordpress project which is still (sort of) on-going. I spend about 2-5 hours a day working on a project - I also have University to attend. I usually work at night, between 7 and midnight (with dinner in the middle).

At this rate, I can get a project with the following features complete within 2-14 days; graphically intense design, valid CSS, valid XHTML, Wordpress implementation and SEO optimisation (still learning). The design takes the most time, I tend to spend a long time designing since it's my real interest. Once you've got the design it only takes a few hours for me to code it up and implement WP with some SEO plugins.

As I said, this is my own limited personal experience, I'm not speaking on behalf of any other freelancers :good:

Probably it's too late for advises, but anywhere..... To my mind you have to improve your skills (for example work for some freelance company: essaywriters.net, elance.com, odesk.com etc.).

Following on from what AndyL has said, I'm 21 and have been doing mydegree for 2 years, during those 2 years (and whilst at college before that) I worked evenings, weekends and summer holidays to earn extra money, which worked quite well.

I'd say you get whatever you want out of it. If you need to earn a living, you'll be working all the time. If you're young, possibly still supported by parents and have less outgoings and more free-time, you'll be able to do projects in your free time without pressure of being overworked.

As I have said before, I work Monday to Friday 6.30 am till 3pm, then again from 7pm till about 11pm. At weekends I am normally on in the evening, and often a full day too.

My workload is quite big, and there are times when I have no choice but to work longer hours (2/3am), and ocassionally pull the all nighter.

You are only as busy as you allow yourself to be, if you only want to work 5 hours a day, that's fine, just take on small jobs, or not as many.

Edit: My job is fulltime and I am a freelance developer/designer.
