  1. Yeah thanks guys I'm gonna find some inspiration and create something a little more unique, you guys are certainly right it just doesn't look very advanced huh just a page of words at the minute!
  2. No feedback?
  3. What do you think guys? Let me know on anything you'd change or whatever!
  4. Ok great stuff. I've already got that on my wishlist actually but I'll be sure to pick it up next time I get paid! Thanks mate! Anyone got got experience with any of the above books?
  5. I ordered some books today. I'm just wondering if anyone has got any experience with any of the books below? I've got a few on HTML and CSS, which I already know quite a bit of, I just need to sharpen up my skills on.. Hopefully these will be good reads: HTML & CSS: Design & Build Websites The Essential Guide to CSS & HTML CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions I got another on Javascript: Javascript: The Definitive Guide I also got another miscelanous book on web standards using the above languages, which is this: Web Standards Creativity: Innovations in Web Design with XHTML, CSS & DOM Scripting
  6. I've been on that site. For me, it's no good, htmldog.com is a lot better. I'm wanting books though to be honest mate. Also; www.w3fools.com outlines what's wrong with that site. I'm not that much of a beginner, I just learn better from books than reading **** online, that's all
  7. I'm currently in the process of learning web design/development. I have these books so far: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logo-Design-Love-Creating-Identities/dp/0321660765/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334750693&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Principles-Beautiful-Design-Edition/dp/098057689X/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334750710&sr=1-4 I'm also ordering these two: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0596101996/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A1GWJJ8PMVB5WB http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0321336577/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A1GWJJ8PMVB5WB Those are for future references once I get to grips with the design & HTML/CSS. I'm just wondering, what book will teach me good code with HTML/CSS? I want a book that's straightforward to read, will teach me a lot on HTML/CSS (I've taught myself a bit.. I guess), something that will really get stuck into positioning stuff around the page well and how to get stuff right cross-browser and stuff. Any ideas anyone? Let me know please!
  8. Thank you. Any more suggestions @ php/javascript/jquery? Thanks!
  9. So, updating my wish list as I'm getting some money coming in soon. Gonna get 2-3 books at a time I guess. Thanks!
  10. Well I got two sites up at the minute to practice on, I'm just reading and getting used to the design aspect at the minute but next week when I get paid I'll take a few books @ CSS & Javascript I think.
  11. Rja posted a topic in Server Side
Is it worth getting into PHP? I am currently just getting the hang of HMTL/CSS and don't know where to go from here. Is there any work left here @ php development? Let me know what you guys think, I'm wanting to get into development as a profession.
  12. I'm trying to create a new general chat/gamer/graphic site. I know what direction I want to take it in, generally. Will start to add content over the next few weeks, with the latest news about games, world affairs, design trends and stuff like that. I'm also up for suggestions on where I should take it. Either here or on the site, some feedback would be nice. And if you're after another community to join, feel free to sign up. http://internetfreaks.org/forums/ Let me now any feedback. I know, it's too cliche at the moment, nothing unique, but I've got several plans on what I think I want to do, and I'll be taking suggestions from the member base on where they want it to go over the next few days/weeks/months, etc. Let me know what you think guys!

Well basically I have an IPB licence from years ago I just re-found. So I was thinking of paying the renewal price and starting up a forum. I'm still getting some ideas, just thinking at the moment. Got a few solid ones but not enough for me to get started yet.. Of course I'm not going to rush into this and create a poorly made forum, if it's something I'm gonna do I gotta find something worth doing it for, I guess.
  14. Rja replied to Rja's topic in General Chat
Thanks the feedback guys. Yeah, you're right, I need a decent idea set in mind I guess. I'm just looking around at the moment fishing for ideas and looking @ competition.
  15. Thanks for the tips mate. I'll keep that in mind on my next tries! Away at the moment so not doing no work :/ As for the font, thanks for the tip I've heard that advice multiple times, too.
  16. Another theme I can up to with too: http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/9813/websitetwo.png
  17. Without all the icons etc at the moment, but that's the basic design so far. Just a tester, actually. Any criticism or whatever to help me out?
  18. Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'm gonna come up with a hobby site to upload, maybe. Something to get into and keep working on to improve my skills, maybe a personal site or whatever, just to keep practicing with. Any other replies on how to get really started and into it? Started reading my books etc today really gonna get into a project soon I think!
  19. I am not doing this for money, no. I'm doing it since I've basically liked/been on the web for years, and I do believe it's something I can get into and yes, I am going to strive to be better and improve. It's not the money that's the motivation, it's the trade. I went to college and did generic A-Levels (business, sociology & psychology), but without carrying those on at university they get me next to nothing.. With the economy as it is, there is little chance to get any job at all. I really don't care if I'm working/doing this for free at the minute, it's just a hobby that I hope one day can turn into a profession. I know it's not an easy field and that competition is tough, but what exactly is being said in that topic? There is no room for others in this field or there is no room for slackers, because trust me I'm at the point where I want to put full energy/effort into this, I just need some tips on how to get started, etc etc.. Thanks mate!
  20. Been thinking about this alately, and I've just been letting it slide away from memory. Started html/css and photoshop design a few months back (just at home), but it just faded out as though it was just another one of those things.. However, been thinking and I'm not doing **** all at the moment, currently unemployed, so what's the best way to get stuck into the design & front-end development of this? I had basic knowledge on html/css and decent photoshop skills, just need to advance them into something unique, etc.. Anyone got any advice/tips on how to get my back into it and get something out of this? Even if I joint this with a full-time job and had a part-time wage coming out of it in the years to come, it'd still be worth it for me. Let me know how you guys started out and progressed!!
  21. I've had a few books now for a while, namely 'The Principles of Beautiful Web Design', 'Logo Design' and another two others 'The Web Design Ideas Book'. I've been on and off Photoshop, on and off with practicing HTML/CSS and more for the last ~~ 3 years. I've been umemployed for months now, but not seemed to be doing much with my time. I'm fed up of not doing nothing, so decided to get back into this and really give it a good go. Looking for a part-time job as well, maybe even full-time, but seriously want to get into this as either a part-time or full-time occupation. So, my question to you guys is, what gave you that drive to keep at it? I mean, I know I won't be getting paid work any time soon, so it's not too financially motivating at the moment, but is there still gaps in the web market for a teenage (well, 19) lad that wants to get into the industry? Or is it already too clustered with aspired-but failing- teenage lads who have nothing better to do with their time (kinda like me? ) Anyways, let me know guys. What gave you that kick-start to think **** this, I'm gonna become a freelance or employed web designer. How did you motivate yourself to work at it every day, knowing that you suck at the moment but are slightly improving? Should I set up a timetable on what times I'll be working at it/studying and what times I have free, or what? Let me know your tactics, guys! Oh, and is it necessary to go to college? I seem to only find foundation degrees and such when looking for courses. Is it still the same if I teach it myself on my own time, etc?
  22. Was thinking of setting a forum up myself.. Not on web or graphic design, maybe gaming or a freedom-ist site. Maybe based on gaming, if there is a gap in the market (not Diablo series, definitely not) I was just wondering if any of you guys had any ideas? What could I base a discussion forum on that may work/attract members where there is a gap in the market (a game/service/discussion forum not being provided for a certain topic) Let me know your thoughts, guys, what do you think would make a good discussion forum?
  23. I was recommended that book in another topic, may have to give it a purchase when I get some more money come my way, maybe after christmas. But this seems to be a good start. The two books seem to be reviewed as great for inspiration (the idea books), the principles is a widely recommended one and the other will help me with logo design. Gonna purchase the one on colour & branding from amazon too. I figure if I spend money on this project I'll definitely get my head stuck into it.
  24. So, today I got paid, currently unemployed so only jobseekers allowance. However, rather than spending my £100 on stupid **** (though I probably shudda got some more christmas presents), I've purchased a few books.. Any thoughts or recommendations on any other books worth having? From the reviews these seem OK but what do you guys think!? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Principles-Beautiful-Web-Design/dp/0975841963/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206106441&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Designers-Ultimate-Themes-Trends-Website/dp/1600610641/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b http://www.amazon.co.uk/Web-Designers-Idea-Book-Website/dp/160061972X/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logo-Design-Love-Creating-Identities/dp/0321660765/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_c Thanks!
  25. No worries. Thanks for the responses guys. Here are the books I am thinking about purchasing since I want to learn more about the design aspect, etc.. How's it look: http://www.abookapart.com/products/responsive-web-design http://www.amazon.co.uk/Principles-Beautiful-Web-Design-2nd/dp/098057689X/ref=pd_sim_b_4 Edit: went with http://www.amazon.co.uk/Principles-Beautiful-Web-Design/dp/0975841963/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206106441&sr=1-1 for now, will buy another soon I think. Which one would you think will benefit me the most?
