I know that most of the posts in this section are normally along the lines of "who is the best / cheapest host" but I'm actually reasonably happy with the package(s) I use.

 

But what I would be interested to know (from those of you that design & arrange hosting for multiple sites), is whether you tend to stick with one hosting provider or spread it around a little.

 

I guess it doesn't really matter what kind of shared/reseller plan you are on, if you are really happy with your provider do you stick with him? Or do you still use other providers as a fall-back should your main hosting service provider have serious server problems or be forced to cease trading suddenly.

 

Which raises another point - in event of a host provider going bankrupt how quickly and easy would it be to transfer a domain if you couldn't get hold of someone?

 

Let me stress, this is purely hypothetical and I have had no experiences of anything like this - however it has got me thinking and I'd be interested to know how other members manage their hosting requirements, rather than who they use.

Personally i tend to stick with one host that i have had good experience with, i have never had a problem with hosts going bust.

 

if the worst was to happen, transferring a domain really isnt too difficult

I keep my domains and my hosting separate That way if either one gets into trouble, i only have ONE problem to deal with. If my domains are with my host, i've gotta deal with both my domains and my hosting.

Just another quickie, always have regular back ups of your files and databases just in case the worse should ever happen.

Once a week I back up everything

If they are any sort of REAL hosting company they will have plans they can put into place if they go under for whatever reason.

 

You should always keep backups of your site for this exact reason so if your provider does go bust then you still have your sites file. Getting a domain back under our control is not that hard anymore.

 

If you have a .uk domain you can change the tag yourself directly at nominet and transfer the domain. Most hosting providers (including us) also use Enom from domain names so you can login with them directly etc (that if if your provider has allowed you to do so).

Keeping your own sites or your clients [if possible] with the one host has a lot of advantages with site management. You are familiar with the control panel and how the hosts systems work so site changes and upgrades etc are so much quicker.

 

And the more reliable hosts have systems in place just in case anything should restrict their services. Eg back up or hand over systems so no client's sites are adversely affected.
