I wonder what is better in the world of SEO link building?

 

Is well formatted img link with alt attribute worse than the text link and how different they are in terms of value?

there probably isn't much difference SEO-wise as search engines can read the alt text and associate it to the link around the image, but I would probably lean more towards text links over image links in terms of how search engines 'value' them

I'm not a SEO expert, but I always chose text links when possible. Or, I think a better aproach is to use CSS for replacing text with image (I use CSScaffold, and it's really easy with it).

Would you not be able to give the adevrtising area it's on div class/id and set the background as a image and place the text over the top inside the div so that you get the image affect but the text as text?

Yes you can do that, best of both words then - imagery and SEO

accessibility would mean text

 

People are used to looking out for blue text which is underlined for hyper links and not used to looking at images which are links... unless of course your image is button looking, then that is something different.
