Flash and SEO

Featured Replies

hi all

I am making a flash site for a furniture design company and the site has to be flash for all the interactivity etc they are after... My question is they want to compete SEO wise and as for seo and flash I am not too famiiar with making flash as search engine friendly as possible... I am tempted to suggest a html front page with loads of content about the company and a huge button saying 'enter portfolio' but I just wanted to know if theres any tecniques I could be using instead which will compensate?

The best method IMHO is to use the flash as content and not run the entire site. So that means key elements of the site such as navigation, text copy, headings etc are normal text content, then use the flash for on-page content whatever you have.

This then...

1. Gives you a search engine friendly, crawlable site

2. All important text copy is text, enabling it to be indexed

3. You can serve up non flash altenatives for users that don't have the flash plugin

i second that, use swfobject.js to embed your swf movie. That way you can have all the text content of your website in place for an alternative to flash

Great advice. I had a flash image that linked to other areas of my site and these pages didn't get crawled. Create a HTML sitemap from the footer and the search engines can find your site from there. This is in addition to relevant anchor text links.

Flash is great and the modern search engines algos nowadays can even take a look inside the codes used but still using the normal texts and images could be preferred from SEO perspectives. The main parts of the sites are better to be projected using words and paragraphs.

some good suggestions - not all applicable however...

the entire site will be a huge flash 'experience' so html/css is not really applicable. Probably going to advise an initial html page - with 'about' style content with a 'launch site' button, as well as a blog on the domain aswell.

IMHO, using flash is like shooting yourself in the foot with the SEO gun. Google is going to have no idea what is going on with the site. Not only that, but many users don't care to have a "flash experience". They go to the movies for that. People going to the site want information, not a long loading time, only to see how nifty your graphics and animations are . .

I would tell them that if they insist on using flash, to forget about SEO.

Superb, the great flash, SEO debate. If you went back a couple of years ago Google had no idea how to index flash sites. Things have moved on since then....if you care to have a read Here and Here

Or you could even buy a book and get really educated Here
