June 26, 200917 yr Hi, I'm putting in a quote to build a site that requires "blog style articles" and a "..forum for members to post comments and debate." I'm ok with html and css but have never put a forum or blog style articles on a site. What is the simplest option for me bearing in mind I don't know any other code languages other than css and html. Thanks for the help. Dan
June 26, 200917 yr I would honestly say that you should not take on the project. If you have no knowledge at all in developing server side code then you could quickly find yourself out of your depth. On the other hand, the best way to learn is to jump in at the deep end... What are the projected time scales for your project? If you have months to get things finished the tinker about with Wordpress for the blog side of things and just feel your way through it. If the time scale is weeks then I would graciously decline the job or farm out the development side to a developer you would trust to carry out the work to a good standard. The most important thing for someone in our industry is never, ever over promise and fail to deliver! Good luck
June 26, 200917 yr Author I don't think they have months for me to be fluffing about finding my way. I cant afford to disappoint them. I think Ill just try and find some simpler jobs. Im finding freelancing seriously stressful
June 26, 200917 yr Keep at it mate - you will be fine. Practice, practice, practice! You should have a play with wordpress as it is a very easy system to get used to, but a deeper understanding of PHP/MySQL will really help you out in the long run. If you don't think you can handle a project of this size, then be honest and explain that to the client, maybe offer to put him/her onto some other people in the industry (people from this forum perhaps). I can see from your site that you are mainly a designer. Why not get yourself a web developer link (again via the site) and that way you can concentrate on design and get them to do the development, and vice-versa

Im finding freelancing seriously stressful Yeah I need to make some contacts with developers. You will be my first point of call if I need a developer. I'm putting in quotes for jobs advertised on freelance job boards for people who don't have a huge budget and might not like bringing in another party. Thanks for the encouragement. :-)
June 26, 200917 yr interesting looking site. one thing though, at the bottom of your homepage, you spelt contact wrong. With regards this project - I would trun it down if you didn't feel up to the task.
June 26, 200917 yr I wouldn't use me as a developer I fall in the category of designer, or at best designoveloper. There are loads of very talented developers on here though so posting in the Looking to Hire section with a sensible budget will get you a lot of interest Good luck mate - with the project and the career

With regards this project - I would trun it down if you didn't feel up to the task. Yeah at the moment I just need some simple jobs to get me out of trouble not drown in a sea of code. Thanks for telling me about the spelling mistake. Im sure that must of impressed potential clients, arggg. terydinho ill take a look in that area of the forum. Might find something there for myself too. :-)
June 26, 200917 yr No offence to terrydhino but I would never put a site into production that you've used to learn!! NEVVVVVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
June 26, 200917 yr No offence taken mate - but sometimes in the industry we are in, you need to learn on the fly. It is not ideal, and if you don't have some form of backup (like a good developer who you can call when things go up the swanny) then you will probably be in trouble. I have only done this once (with wordpress) and I already had a bit of PHP knowledge so it's not exactly the same thing. I would advise against taking on anything you know you can't handle, but for some people, without being thrown in at the deep end, they never learn

With many of the projects I am bidding on they are able to leave reviews of work done. Unless you have a forgiving employer who is understanding they probably wont tolerate me embarking on a new learning curve. Having a developer to lend a hand would be the ideal solution. I agree throwing yourself in can work wonders but you have to choose carefully where you dive in.
