E-Commerce dilema

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am currently building a gallery site, which I ultimately would like to take payments on.

Here lies my dilema; Do I look to use something like OS-Commerce, adpating all the code myself, or would it be easier to use, say for example my hosts merchant tools to process payment?

Or is there an alternative more efficient or simpler way?

Any guidance or advice would be great.

Cheers,

Jay.

That really depends on a lot of factors...

1. What sort of products will you be selling?

2. How many products, now and in 2 years time

3. Would you like to offer customers various ways to pay, ie Credit/debit card, Paypal, COD etc

4. Do you need to be able to upsell products, ie specia offers, discounts/coupons etc

5. Do you need customer accounts, either for public, or say wholesale?

Hey, with regards to your questions:

1. Prints and canvases

2. Hundreds

3. All of the above (if possible)

4. Not for the time being

5. Ideally yes.

Does this help??

Have a look at http://www.webdesignerforum.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=20654 - there are several shopping cart systems listed there - all of which should be able to accomodate your needs.

When choosing a cart system it's a good idea to look into the future as to what you might need. That way you can choose the right cart that fits with your business plan. Migrating your site to a different shopping cart later on is not always easy so it pays to get the right cart first time.

The best approach is to write yourself a list of every single feature you may need, for now and in the future. Then look through as many carts as you can and compare them to your list. You should then be able to whittle it down to a couple of choices.

It would appear most sensible to go for a shop script which you can customise.

What are the "hosts merchant tools"? Do they have any limits/costs/restrictions that might be a problem?
