May 21, 200917 yr Ok I just want to confirm here why Meta keywords are no longer important. Well , maybe it is for google. But I think, Yahoo still uses it. And If you want to get high rankings in SERP do you think we still need to consider optimizing a meta keyword for our site?

May 22, 200917 yr Nahhh, app. most search engines are moving away from keywords, HOWEVER some of the lesser known search engines still use them, some css galleries extract them when posting your site and a few other bits and pieces use them. I see no problem with leaving them in there, it's not going to do any harm. How can user find your site without the keyword?....If its pagerank, I will agree with you... Google uses the actual page content to decipher weather it's relevant or not, Google care about giving people the most accurate search results, and well meta keywords rarely actually ever sum the page contents up, it's more a few specific terms, and a lot of general ones, which isn't good if they based there results on them.

Yeah, what i meant was that while they should be relevant, on alot of sites though, they seem to be quite general. I'm not saying they should be general, the more you can refine your content and keywords the better. Take this page for example <meta name="keywords" content="web design, forum, web designer, design, css, blogs, web blogs, community, design forum, php, xhtml, templates, seo, google adsense, website help, logo"> They mostly bare little relevance to this specific page, but more to the site as a whole.

If you feel more comfortable using it, you can have about 15 important non-repetitive keywords in this Tag, separated by commas. List the primary keywords that pertain to that specific page, while putting the most important words at the beginning of the tag.
August 13, 200916 yr Personally I still add them as it only takes a few seconds and some search engines still use them. Google may one day begin using them again you never know! Just ensure they are relevant to the page you are working on.
August 18, 200916 yr Metatags keywords are still relevant and are being checked by the search engines , however nowadays the importance of the offsite SEO such as link exchange is more important than metatags.
August 18, 200916 yr Please consider the relevance of the term in the keywords tag to the page content. Some search engines don't like having a keyword tag that does not appear in the content. So a carefully selected keywords in this tag that also appear on the page the tags are for is good practise. Tim
August 21, 200916 yr I wrote a blog post about this quite a while ago, this is the conclusion I came to if anyone is interested! ----------------------- I’ve read lots of peoples opinions over the last few months on various forums / blogs etc. that the meta keyword tag is no longer important. To be honest, I would of agreed with them, until I accidentally find out that yahoo still values it. Even though I previously thought meta keywords were insignificant, when optimising a site, I still included them as I’ve always thought it is good practice. Last month, when doing some ranking checks for one of our clients, I noticed that in Yahoo, the site was ranking first for acne specialists, but no where at all for acne specialist! It was one of those situations where you just think, eh? The page was more optimised for acne specialists, than acne specialist but one would assume that one letter would not make much difference, after all it didn’t in the google rankings. When checking through the code on the page I noticed straight away that I had not included acne specialist as a phrase in the meta keywords section. So I added it to the keywords, uploaded the page then what do you know, less than a week later the page had been re-cached and the site was second in Yahoo for acne specialist. I was quite surprised that Yahoo relied on meta keywords so much. Perhaps I’m looking too much into it, maybe it was just a coincidence, but I personally feel there is some yardage in still using meta keywords, so I would advise all my fellow search engine optimisationers to do the same. -----------------------

August 26, 200916 yr Like others here I still include them just as good practice. Just because they aren't counted by Google for rankings, doesn't mean that they aren't used as a quality indicator though. Also, I find them handy as part of search facilities on larger sites. You can add mis-spellings that you wouldn't want in the page text and still return that page as a result for site search.
October 23, 200916 yr yes i too read this on Google webmaster blog also from matt cutts blog. This is because of webmasters started abusing its use.
