I'm a freelance web designer, but I have never had experience working for someone else as a designer. My old job was a programmer.

 

I've been contemplating looking at doing one day a week work experience in a graphic design office - just to see how things work. I'm never set in my ways and I'm interested in getting different levels of experience.

 

Has anyone else done this/thought about it. I don't want it to damage my current reputation but on another level I think it could really help!

I think that would do nothing but improve your experience so I'd say go for it. From the sound of it you'd be adding some graphic design experience which can only enhance your web design skills.

Yes absolutely! Ive been killing myself for a placement this summer for so many reasons, but having a big ish company on your CV can do you no end of good - unless you plan to work for yourself for the rest of your life, in which case just seeing how a company does business could be good for yours

How could it damage your reputation?

Go for it. I can't possibly see how it could damage your reputation and I'd imagine the new contacts would make it worthwhile before you've even consider how much you will learn.

 

I'm currently looking for an internship at a London agency as applying for junior roles without industry experience isn't getting me anywhere. I'm hoping to do this full-time for at least a couple of months.

I have always been a firm believer that work placements are well worth it. If nothing else, you can hopefully add to your portfolio.

 

Although i am only a freelancer myself, i have worked with a few "apprentice" type people on some of my projects, and even though they didnt earn much, it was still experience and they can say "ive done some work before and here is my portfolio"

 

Portfolios speak volumes in this business, as ive found out.

Portfolio makes client see what you've got and not listening to you speak and doubt on your words.

Just go for it, there's absolutely nothing to lose. The only problem that I'd have as one of your clients is the fact that most website design companies get you to sign a contract swearing that you won't do any work outside of your job, due to possible conflict of interest, so you'd basically have to outsource all of your old work to another trusted web designer.
