1and1

Featured Replies

Just wondering, what is everyone's feeling on 1and1.

I've used them for a few years and found them to be pretty good - but I've heard many people hate their guts...

Indeed, your not wrong. Do a google search for "1and1 suck" or 1&1 suck"

The list seems endless

The thing is that if a hosting company is big there are going to be a lot of complaints about them due to more people feel the need to complain then give a pat on the back. If they sucked and everyone who was with them and used them thought they were as bad as reviews say, they wouldn't have lasted as long as they had as people would get fed up and move.

If you have had no problems with them and they give you the service that you require then that is what you need :p

Personally my hosting is with streamline, and I can't complain about them at all, for the years I have been with them my site has been up and I have had two problem with them, which were resolved in a matter of hours. Yet there are people saying you shouldn't use them because their customer service sucks...which I will admit is robotic and none personal, but this is something that doesn't bother me, as long as my site is up, loads quickly and the problems I do have are solved quickly, I really couldn't care less if they say to me that my issue has been solved in a robotic manner or a human manner. However I do commend those hosting companies that do have a more personal touch and aren't just a big faceless company, but big faceless companies aren't always as bad as their reviews, they just have more people using them and you can never satisfy everyone.

So its your opinion of the hosting that counts, if you feel that these complaints about 1and1 are an issue then find another host, if you have had no problem with them then maybe you should stick with them if they do what you need them to do :p

Dizi has hit the nail on the head there ^. The bigger the company the more people to complain. I have been with 1and1 now for just over a year and i haven't had one problem. The prices ain't that bad either.

Yea sounds about right. What about the fact they host in Germany not the UK? (only really relevant to us Brits for SEO etc)

Open a computer magazine.

Notice the double page spreads? The quad page spreads? I think i've even seen 1&1 have 8 page spreads sometimes. These companies mentioned in this thread spend a lot on advertising. They spend so much on advertising in this way because they're forced to - their customer churn is so high that they need the continual influx of new customers to keep going.

Other companies are more focused on looking after and keeping existing customers.

I used to have hosting with 1&1, and I have to say I had no real problems with them, barring the fact it was slightly difficult to converse with their customer support staff owing to language differences (and pronunciation). I chose to mosey on over to WESH because I started getting a lot more paid work and needed to have more databases - they offered a lot more for the same price, plus great customer service and a much more effective control panel admin.

I used to have hosting with 1&1, and I agree with Dizi and sunwukung (as usual :p ). The hosting itself was fine, excellent uptime, but the customer service left a lot to be desired, and it was very expensive for what you got in my opinion. I moved hosts and now I can have as many databases as I want for no extra charge. 1&1 would have milked me for all I had.

Is it cpanel?

1and1 use their own control panel interface - not cPanel.

:DI have just moved from One and One to Clook (because of recommendation on this site), after a good few years. I think they are ok as long as you don't need any customer service.

I contacted them because Google analytics's was showing some warning on some of my pages on different systems saying they were slow responding. I contacted one and one and they basically just said it must be the site, and that if I wanted to leave contact x. I didn't want to leave I just wanted them to solve the problem, which I emailed back. I never heard back from them again apart from a customer survey.

Clook have been fantastic, I went for the reseller package. They get back really quick, (within 10 minutes usually :D ) and have solved all my problems with moving several EE sites over to them, moving domains, setting account up etc. Also the Control Pannel gives you much more control.

My advice to anybody looking for a new host, is to ignore all the glossy ads and look for hosts recommended by other designers on a forum like this - the same recommendation come up again and again if there any good.

Personal recommendations are the best, you know they are geniune (most of the time).

Avoid any site that trys to tell you which host is best, as it's relative like anything.

It's which host is best for you and if your happy with them then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
