I am going to be doing a website for a florist and think a cms is what's needed so she can add pics later on etc.

 

Also there maybe a potential for ecommerce in the future.

 

I am happy with wordpress but not sure it's right for a job that may expand considerably over time. I have considered drupal and joomla. i want something which is highly adaptable as the company is only small atm but she is hoping to expand in the near future... also from my point of view I want to get into a cms which i can use for a variety of situations.

 

I also have another jobs poss so would be good to implement it there too...

 

There seem to be some issues with loading joomla for some of my friends; is this likely to be their content or rather the joomla bits and bob?

As a florist, does the person make the same flower arrangements every day? Or do they make unique arrangements every time? I'd imagine they make unique arrangements everytime. Try doing that with a shopping cart CMS...it becomes almost pointless because there is no real inventory if everything is custom made.

 

I would use Wordpress to show customers the possibilities...pictures and words sell. You can still have people order online using a contact form...and pay however they like.

Go for Interspire shopping cart - http://www.interspire.com/shoppingcart/ - the latest version has some useful bits like customers being able to choose timed deliveries, and a pretty much full CMS for adding misc pages.

The minimum package on interspire is $295 ..... is this about what i can expect for anything which isn't open source?

$295 (£175) or even $995 (£600) is a relatively small sum in ecommerce terms. Don't get confused with "Open Source" - all of Interspires scripts are fully open so you can tinker to your hearts delight if you wanted to, not that you'd ever need to though!

 

One major point for this job you mentioned is future expansion. Doing it on a tight budget will inevitably lead to additional costs down the road so why not spend the money now building a site that is expandable and future proof?

 

If cost is a major issue then you'd be looking at Open source - Wordpress/Joomla etc - and mackling up something to suit. However, doing it this way can sometimes work out more costly than working with a top quality product like Interpsires - swings and roundabouts!

 

As ever I always recommend going for the right solution based on features and flexibility rather than price.

Ok... I will talk to my friend and see what she says.... I don't hold out much hope though lol
