I found an ad in a newspaper asking for people to be trained and then work for them for £17k - £32k as a web designer. I phoned them and i've got an interview tomorrow. My problem is that they say a contribution may be required, and they're pretty vague on what that might mean on the phone.

 

They do say that they will employ me after the training. Not 'we might employ you', or 'we'll help you find work'.

 

It's quite a long horrible trip to the interview so i'm not going to be happy if they ask for a few thousand pounds for training.

 

Has anyone applied for anything like this?

It does sound 'too good to be true' !

But id give them another ring and demand(politely) for more information perhaps.

 

But just going and checking it all out wouldnt hurt. Just be careful not to sign the dotted line for something straight away.

I don't mind paying £100 maybe for exams if i'm guaranteed a 17k paying job at the end. But otherwise i'm not paying to be given a job.. it kind of beats the objective of getting a job.

I did a sort of apprenticeship thing where I did training for a few months then did a 3 month work placement and then got a permanent job.

 

Although mine was all free they might have required me to pay for college if I was older (I was only about 17 when I started).

 

Check out the company that it's for & where your training will be etc before you go to the interview and then ask some questions about how much you might have to pay and what it's for. If they're vague with their answers you might be best staying away.

These guys ARE based in East Croydon, I know, because I've been there... I was interviewed by a guy after filling out a short form.. he told me that a SMALL contribution of £3k would buy me qualifications in ICDL and CIW (Certified internet Webmaster). This guy interviewing me is meant to be a PRO in IT and then started giving me bs about "I've been a web designer since 1993" so i asked a simple question.. "I was 3 in 1993, what languages were about back then?" (Regarding PHP, HTML, ASP etc.), he tells me "Im not too sure, I didn't do the front end stuff"... A) Coding is CLEARLY backend. and In any case, that means he DESIGNED. Total tool.

 

So, an hour later I met my friend for lunch who was going to the SAME place, Redwood Futures, East Croydon, for a plumbers course... GUESS WHAT PRO INTERVIEWED HIM?! The same retard that told ME was a PRO in Web development... was now a PRO in Plumbing!

 

Which i found funny. I canceled the interview.

Edit: for anyone who doesnt get it, this is a joke. Although i do sometimes offer a kind of training to the right people.

Ive been to one of these, it was a hell of a mission to get there, and they wanted me to do it every day for around 2 years.

They claimed I would get a £20k job at the end, and I would be CIW certified. Right at the end, they told me the contributions amounted to around 5 grand.

 

I said I could decide on the spot, and they phoned me every day for around a week afterwards.. Even though I was telling them I wasnt interested.
