Currently, I'm in high school and many are aware of my current web design skills and experience. To perfect my skills, I signed up for the web design class under the assumption that the teacher was a web guru. I, however, was sadly mistaken. The teacher knows minimal knowledge of web design (He thought that internet explorer was the only way to browse the internet, for example) and in most occasions, I find myself teaching him about web design. I am also expected to endure his highly incorrect speeches on web design (He told the class that marquees are the best feature of HTML (not joking!)) on a daily basis.

 

A few weaks earlier, the web design "teacher" learned the full extent of my web knowledge and out of pure jealousy and frustration, is currently forcing me to create a full blown website. He then informs me that if I do not, I will basically automatically fail the class. Personally, I have no problem making a website, I actually enjoy it. He then informs me that I have 1 week to finish this full blown website. Did I mention that he wants javascript/flash animations as well? I would charge about $1500 for what he is asking, but instead he will be giving me a grade.

 

I have thought of several ways to approach this situation.

 

1. I endure his hatred and complete the website, completely amazing him in the process.

2. Refuse his request, fail the class, and shock everybody

3. Refuse his request, spit in his face, slap him, and force him to give me a good grade anyway because I am no pushover.

 

What would you do in my situation.

I would do none of them, go to him and tell him that if he doesn't stop bullying you that you will put in a formal complaint to the school/college/uni/whatever. That bullying is a serious offence and a teacher bullying a student would be highly frowned upon....especially if it came out that he doesn't know that much about what he is actually teaching. You expect as a student to be treated like one and just because you know more about web design then he does gives him no right to treat you any differently and that jealousy really doesn't suit him. Kindly request the course work and complete the course in that one lesson

As a teacher I must say I have got to second her suggestion. I am not sure how things work, however over here the final exams is all that counts anyway so technically a student could fail all year and then just pass IGCSE exams and still have that. If you are at uni or college perhaps write a formal complaint as you are probably paying a lot for this course.

PS I would not just do a crap project out of spite as someone might actually see it and think that is all you are capable of and in fact judge your ability according to this!

the funny thing is that I already have and I'm just helping other people in the class. It's quite frustrating because they code in the LOWEST form of HTML Trasitional and it's a mess.

 

I guess this topic was more of a rant, but I just had to let it out.

And I would imagine that if you actually quit the web design class (which you presumably signed up to voluntarily and probably don't need by the sounds of it), you can't fail it.

I think you need to pay more attention to the image on the front, it looks very untidy... apart from that its a nice simple start, If I were you I'd just do it and do it well, show him what your made of by reacting to his behavior your playing straight in to his hands.

You are obvisously a smart guy - so here's what I'd do!

 

Design the website, and get an A* in the course.

 

Your teacher may be a f*ck!ng idiot - but you will have that qualification for the rest of your life!

 

You can then easily move on to a good graphic design course at your chosen university (or college) and you will definately be accepted.

 

Showing this much creativity and dedication and this time in your life shows your character and will show a future employer that you are the kind of person who will be an asset to their company!

 

Don't give up! - Show that d!ckhead teacher that you are better than to lye down and take their bullying CRAP!

I just put the image there as a quick mock up. The full quality picture will be put up soon. I think I'll follow everybody's advise altogether and do my best on this page, meaning that some things will have to change. I think I'll also make a CMS for him since I have lot's of time in his class.

Actually I am really a teacher and one of my biggest fears is that I will have a student who actually knows more than me.

Sometime as teachers we get thrown in the deep end. Because I am a real nerd and know a lot about PC's a few years ago I was asked to present IGCSE ICT course. The theory is fine but the practical was a nightmare. My approach was to sit down and ensure I could actually do all the stuff and more then required. I spent hours and hours and more hours creating databases and learning html and CSS and java script and god know what all else. Then I set about creating real live working databases and websites so that I would never find myself in the position your teacher is in now.

All I am trying to say, you probably scare the #$*# out of him!

As an aside I do have a student who is way cleaver than I and he is only 10! Fortunately I don't teach him computers but we meet once a week and shows me what cool programming he has learned the past week and I am teaching him how to code a web site using CSS not tables. Please keep in mind he is 10 and has taught himself table layouts, javascript and is currently reading a book in C++

I learn a lot from him! Goes figure!

I will be making a logo later this evening. Based on the logo, I will improve how the content interacts with the page itself.

That kid sounds a little like me . I, however, decided to put aside programming such as C++ and perl and settle with the web design languages which was my true passion. The Java programming language is still a good thing to retain since you can make applets and put them on the internet, though.
