I've come across a load of sites that offer free downloadable Photoshop Brushes today and I wonder what you do with these. I'm not a photoshop user but some of the brushes look pretty cool - but how do you use them exactly and what do you use them for.

Great stuff! Brushes is somethign i'v really wanted to play around with and learn, soon i'll be needed a grungey/worn edges look and need to look at different brush styles, i'll check these out.

How do you use them though - are there fireworks alternatives?

I usually just go to Deviantart.com to get my brushes and other resources. They have really proffesional brushes and other resources for 7.0 and CS2.

Well I use them in Photoshop, I am a Fireworks user as you know, but i'm starting to learn Photoshop. I think it has very powerful features that fireworks can't achieve, I read that custom brushes can create some very spectacular results, so this is something I want to harness and use.

 

I'v always messed with fireworks "Eye Candy" and "Torn Edges" under the effects tab to achieve some nice effects, but as since the aquisition of Macromedia by Adobe, I thought I best get learning Adobe! Though to be honest, I still see myself using Fireworks for a long time...old habits die hard!

 

I'm going to find some tutorials on brushes online and have a go. I've only got photoshop 7, but I'm sure there are still tutorials out there for that version.

i used to use fireworks but after using it for like a few months i converted to photoshop and i must say its the best software for gfx editing out there

I've tried using photoshop so many times now as it has amazing image editing facilities and brushes are just fantastic, but I find it an impossible program to design websites with...I'm a Fireworks Gal through and through. So now I just find the brushes I want and create a document in photoshop with the brushes in and just open that in frieworks and use the brushes that way - not ideal and not that flexible, but better than nothing!

If you do your bits in photoshop, you can export your result as transparent png and import in fireworks that way

I don't know if you know Bert Monroy, he's one of the "big guy" of photoshop, he use to be in the old techTV.

He does a show on revision3 at the moment called pixel perfect and strangely enough, the latest episode is about brushes
