  1. Thank you. It was a pretty good feeling and a load off my mind
  2. This is true. I should of walked away at that point. It was amazing he said that he never asked for that and said he has proof in his meeting notes of this. Then a day later he calls back and says that he looked at his notes and he did actually ask for that... but now he doesn't want that and not to include it. He was so arrogant and belligerent In the end I kept the deposit but the money wasn't worth dealing with him.
  3. So late last year I was approached by someone to do a design job. I went through all the meetings, asking questions to get the info I need to do a quote. I then spent the time putting a proposal and a quote and send it through to the client. I then contact them again letting them know it's been sent and for them to read it and get back to me. Later on I gave a follow up call to make sure they got it and they said they'll look at it. After a while I still haven't heard anything back. I call again and ask if they receive and have read it. They tell me they haven't looked at it and ask me when did I send it. I give them the exact date. They then tell me to send them another copy and they'll look at it. Even though they've been sent a copy, I send another one. This week, I realized it's been weeks and still nothing from this guy. At this point I was fed up and the mental energy with dealing with these kinds of clients isn't worth it. If they can't spend five minutes reading a document, imagine how painful doing the actual job will be. I call up and speak to the client, I tell them that I'm following up the proposal I've now sent twice and that I never heard back from. As soon as he goes to speak, I can tell he never bothered looking at it. I tell him I have had other work offers and because we haven't progressed, I'm going to move on with those. I thank him for his time and wish him the best. He then starts giving me excuses about being busy and says that he'll probably come back to me later in the year. I don't bite on this and just say thank you and have a good day. As much as we try and accommodate people, I gets tiring having people wanting you to do work but then can't be bothered reading an email, looking at a document or picking up the phone. They drag things out for weeks and months with the same stock excuses. Firing someone like this is a nice weight off my shoulders and something I should do more often.
  4. How do you usually designing a website around a logo that's not that good? Working on a website that has a logo with typeface that's not very appealing and the colours aren't very appealing either. The client is happy with their logo and isn't looking to update it which is fair enough. However I want to minimize any negative impact of the logo on the rest of the design and like to get some advice on how to achieve this? My ideas so far is to keep the logo pretty smaller in the header and to use a more modern and attractive font for the rest of the website. I'm also going to sample a single colour from the logo and then use that as a primary colour and then use more muted colours like white, grey and black around it.
  5. Just a follow up on this. (long post) This client continued to be erratic and difficult to work with. They never delivered the content they were suppose to but continued to demand things from me. They would contact me randomly with things that didn't make sense. I would ask for clarification about what they were talking and they would reply with more nonsensical responses. If I tried to ask further for them to explain what they were talking about, they would get belligerent towards me. If I asked them about the things that they hadn't delivered for the website, they'd get belligerent at me and saying how they're too busy with other things and how I don't understand what they're dealing with. They also demanded that I come in for more meetings at their convenience at a certain time and place. I couldn't do this but offered to come in at a different time but was told this didn't suit them. I also asked them what these meetings were about and what needed to be discussed in person. They could never give me a straight answer. They also kept contacting me randomly outside of business hours. I politely reminded them of my hours and to contact me during certain business hours. Their response was that they know businesses have regular hours BUT they themselves are always working and that's why they contact me outside business hours. They also started using more aggressive and bossy language saying things like "Just get on with it", "I am telling you to do this", "you're ordered to" and trying to treat me like a employee and that I'm never to question them on anything. Everything reached a peak when I got another nonsensical email from them which I had to go back multiple times to workout what the heck they were talking about. They then asked me some info about the project. This info had already been given to them in a face to face meeting but I gave it to them again. We then had a call where they were aggressive and rude saying things like "listen to me". They then started going on about the info I'd just given and accusing me of never giving it to them. I told them they we had spoken about this info during a earlier face to face meeting. They then basically accused me of lying because they couldn't remember it. I told them when and where I told them this information and that we definitely spoke about it. They then moved the goalposts and said "well you didn't gave me this info in a official documented email" and so verbal discussions now don't count. They then moved onto another topic. When I was trying to explain something, they would constantly misconstrued what I said how they don't want to do the thing that they misheard. I kept saying "I didn't say that, what I said was..." and they would keep mishearing it and started getting more belligerent. They then started making thinly veiled threats about keeping me on this project and getting other people to do the project. They then started demanding my qualifications. When I asked them what they were going on about, they just kept speaking over me, telling me to be quiet and saying that I'm employed by them and I'm to follow orders... I then tried to ask something and that's when they got more aggressive and swore at me loudly. I was taken back by this and asked them why they're now swearing at me? They laughed and acted like this was normal behavior. I called them out that they can't be speaking to people like this and being abusive and they just went back to their "You're to do what you're told" and kept talking over me. I didn't really back down from the way they were now treating me and they had a tantrum and basically said, cancel the job, cancel the contract, they'll get someone else to do it" and hung up on me. I called back and asked them why they were being like this, they doubled down and said to send them a bill and hung up on me. I then penned a termination of project letter. This client has lied and forgotten so many things. They never delivered on many of their responsibilities. They've changed specs and moved completion dates on a whim when they couldn't meet them. They have told me I'm wrong and making up things but I know I had told them for certain. They declare they have notes saying that I was incorrect and they were right. Only to contact me a day later and said they read their notes and I was actually correct. They will arrogantly say how they're so educated and experienced in these things. But then flip the script and say "I don't understand this tech stuff. It's your job to teach me!" They lack the ability to form coherent correspondents and will jump from one topic to another and then get upset when you ask for clarification. They will start to order you around like a subordinate and think because they hired you to do a job, they boss you around and tell you to do as you are told. They will talk over you, swear at you and act like this is fine and then threaten to hire someone else if you don't appreciate being treated like this.
  6. I've been trying to keep a paper trail with this person. But it becomes very difficult as they'll just jump from on topic to another without coming to a conclusion on what we were talking about. Same with the phone. They'll just go on meandering diatribes and it becomes so hard to steer the conversation.
  7. Basically it says if the job is cancelled, I'm entitled for payment for the work done (i have already been paid a deposit) However in the contract I haven't outlined reasons why I can cancel a job. This is the first time I've had an issue like this and haven't made it super specific in my contract.
  8. That's what I try and do these days. If I run into a difficulty, I try and learn a lesson to not repeat it.
  9. I've was hired to to do a website project. However this job has become quite difficult and I'm at the point where I want to leave as it's become stressful and it won't get any better. Client changes the specs of the project on the fly. Tells me that they want specific features. I go and add it and when I'm speaking to them later, they say "I never asked for that" we go back and forth and I remind them of when they requested it and they flat out deny it. They claim that they have notes of the project and can prove to me that they never requested this and that I'm wrong. A day later they come back and tell me they went through their notes and they did actually request the feature but they now don't want it and want me to scrap it. Client changes completion date. They wanted the website done by a certain date and was needed to be done in a quick time frame. I warned them they'll need to have all their side of everything done so we can meet the launch date. Then they scrap the launch date when they realized they hadn't planned this properly and weren't going to have things ready. This resulted in me rushing to get things done and now not being able to get things done. They take forever to do basic things. I'll request a document from them and they'll tell me "I'm working on it and I'll have it to you in X days". It'll never arrive and I'll get another email saying "working on the document, have to you in X days." Then it still doesn't arrive and I'll get another message saying "I've completed the document. I'll have it to you in X days" and it still doesn't arrive. Client constantly forgets things we've discussed and I'll have to remind them constantly. I also ask for things to be done which they say they'll get onto and they'll never do them. Also trying to keep conversations on track is difficult as they jump from one thing to another and I have to keep steering them back on point Client will be too busy to do things for the project and will pass on their responsibility because they're too busy with other things and the project stalls. At this point, I'm over this project and how this person behaves. I'd like some feedback if I'm in the right for wanting to cancel the project and walk away? Thanks
  10. Hi. Had some one inquirer about me doing some work for them and wanted me to call them at a certain time. Initially they didn't answer calls, then told me to call back at another agreed time and then flaked again and rescheduled again. Eventually later that week I got to have a chat with them, everything went well and it looked like the job was going to go ahead. Sent them some documents to look over before we proceeded. Emailed the documents and texted them to let them know they'll be sent. I didn't hear back for a week so I ended up calling them up and they said " Sorry, been really busy. Email it to me again and I'll read it and get back to you today." I did that and heard nothing for days. Sent them a message saying " I resent the documents, did they come through" and I get another "sorry, I'll read them and get back to you today" and heard nothing back. While they were nice people when I spoke to them on the phone, I find they're not doing basic things like reading things I send, scheduling basic communications and I feel they're not respecting my time. I'm thinking at this stage just moving on and saying that I'm not interested in pursuing this project. I feel like there's too many red flags already.
  11. Yeah it's something I never had an issue with people delaying payment but I can totally see the issue with it now. I'll be be changing that with my payment structure from now on. I think I've always been a bit hesitant with certain things with the contract or payments due to what clients may think. Which is kind of dumb. But yeah it did cause me unnecessary stress and I hate chasing people up as it's a time waster. I'm not exactly 100% sure why they screened my calls. Halfway through the job they started delivering poor quality and minimal content. I went back to discuss with them amending the content to help the overall site and gave suggestions. After that they went MIA for a week or so. I pursued them about it and pushed for it as the project was overdue and they were slowing things up. Their response was to get passive aggressive and dismissive. I tried to communicate with them the need for a certain quality of content as well as keeping things on schedule, they continued to be passive aggressive and would give me few word replies. I decided just to finish the job with what they had provided, moved on and get paid. Once they saw the final product they said they really liked it and to go ahead with the launch and their attitude changed. After launch and invoices were sent is when I had to start chasing them up. When I first spoke to them on the phone they were apologetic and "been really busy" "will pay today" excuses and their attitude was friendly and I thought they'd had adjusted their attitude. However after that is when all the call screening, no replies had started. Fortunately I had not given her any logins, email login etc so she had no power to steal the site. Possibly they thought if they'd ignored for long enough, I'd give up and not worry about it. But to be honest I was ready to give them a one week warning before suspending the site and possibly reusing the design for something else. As for working with them again, I don't want to. The way they've acted plus the way I see them act on social media (petty dramas) isn't worth the energy. At most I'll continue to host their site and do paid updates but I won't work with them on another project. The way they promote their business makes me think the business may not be successful and is not something I would want to get involved with. I have clients who are nice and are good to work with who I'll give my energy too. This person is now just someone I've had to deal with and I'll be moving on now I think.
  12. Hello. So for awhile I have been doing website projects where usually I get a deposit at the start and the remainder after the site is launched. This has worked fine most of the time with my clients paying a few days after the launch. However I just had a client who gave us the go ahead to launch their site but then never paid their final invoice. I managed to get in contact with them and they promised to pay that day. They didn't. They then started screening my calls, not replying to emails, DMs txts etc. I was getting ready to begin the process of suspending their site when they finally paid after weeks and weeks of trying to get out of it. I'm now thinking of now not launching peoples websites until they pay the full amount. How many of you do this? and is this the best way to go?
