Not to insult anyone in these types of positions, but to the OPs question -- I recommend you find a webmaster type job in a marketing department. Maybe maintaing a corporate web site instead of programming enterprise web applications on an engineering team. The coding skills required are usually far less stringent for corporate web sites, and you sound like you have a bit of experience in both design and front-end coding, but maybe not enough to do fulltime javascript/php, full stack programming...

are you using more specific selectors, is your included *below* the twitter included css? You can also try !important on your rules to override.

What's the latest and greatest in grid frameworks out there? I am leaning towards 960.gs but that seems kind of small these days... 1080.gs looks good, but I don't see the code on github or anything so I have no idea if it even works.
