  1. So would you say this is a good plan?.. 1:Enrol on degree to start this September 2:Keep using treehouse to get a grip of html and css and practice daily, plus is makes the degree easier to absorb 3: Enrol on a photoshop/illustrator course (im ok with photoshop just not brilliant with layers etc) 4:concentrate solely on html and css for the first 2yrs of degree and in the 3rd year start learning php and jscript 5: whilst working in the industry for the 12 months before moving to aus, really practice with php and jscript so im as good at it as html and css Matt
  2. Hi, Passion I have in bucket loads and commitment is not a problem. I know I can pick it all up , its just being streetwise with it. I'm sure somebody could learn how to lay bricks but they aren't going to be as fast or confident as a proper bricklayer for a few years and its that, that I worry about. Are they going to expect me to be super fast and confident in my work? Know what I mean? Matt

Hi, Ok, i have a plan, a long term plan but a plan. I plan to enrol on a degree in web design (3yrs) and then when graduated, go and get a job as a web designer for 12 months and then move to Australia. Ive looked at a few job adverts and most say must have php skills and jscript so my question is... In the 3yrs do you think it is possible for a normally intelligent person as myself to learn php and jscript whilst doing the degree or in the year after i graduated and be at a level where i would be employable? Matt
  4. Hi and welcome to WDF. This iw what i worry about when the time comes for me to hopefully get a job in webdesign. Matt
  5. Hi and welcome to WDF Matt
  6. Hi, I am new to webdesign and have found treehouse a very easy way to learn. Google treehouse and it offers a membership for $25 a month. Matt
  7. Hi, I subscribed to treehouse and am finding it much easier to learn than reading a book Matt
  8. Well.... Ive subscribed to Treehouse and am flying through it , and must say i am LOVING web design! Perhaps i learn better with a video than i do with a book as I've tried a few books and just couldn't get my head round it. Matt
  9. Hi, Im trying to get my head around web design and how its done. Im one of them where it takes me a while to 'get it' but when i do , i really do. Please take a look at the image I've attached of a simple mockup of a simple website. Am i right in thinking you set out the boxes first , then fill it with the desired text , then css it to make it look pretty and then hide the outline of the boxes when its all finished? Matt
  10. Hi, Was just wondering if you use a pc or a mac? Not interested in starting a debate on which is better overall , i know thats down to personal choice but i must say , until i bought the mac last week i found i could be quite productive with learning web design. Noticed with the mac , there is a lot more clicking about and generally not as nice to web design with. Anyone agree/disagree? Matt
  11. Cheers! Have googled about this but can't find a text editor that has this feature and works on mac? Matt
  12. lol you love your googling demos don't you. Cant this be replicated in textedit? Matt
  13. Hi, Whats an ide? Also is there no way to replicate that in textedit or something else for mac Matt
  14. Hi, Ive just seen a video about web design and the chap showed the opening and closing end tag popping up and then the curser in the middle ready to put the code. So he pressed something and <> popped up and the cursor was in the middle. Whats the keyboard shortcut for this on a mac? Matt P.S Its at 4:00 on this video http://teamtreehouse.com/library/design-foundations/html/introduction/markup/play
  15. So basically your saying to learn html and css, use the xhtml rules of closing tags and lowercase but make sure i put content="text/html" at the top so the web knows its to be translated as html and not xhtml Matt
  16. Sorry , my bad, it actually does state that its xhtml 1.1 The publication date is 2005. Am i right in thinking that all the normal text based stuff of html5 and the css stuff in html5 will work on any browser, its just the new stuff , such as video and 3d canvas graphics that is a bit iffy? If so does anybody know a decent html5 book for people with no experience of html at all? Matt
  17. Hi, Having read a bit of this Sams HTML and CSS in 24hrs i can understand what he was saying now when he says "XHTML and XML are the new standards for web page creation" as in effect he is right. HTML5 is more strict and has to have closed tag for instance (from what i have read anyway) so the best thing to do is if i follow this book which is actually XHTML 2.0 (not the pure xhtml). Am i right in thinking that its better to learn html with the more strict xhtml rules but not as pure xhtml as when i do come to learn html5 i will be already used to lower case and closed tags etc Matt
  18. This is all so confusing. Whats the benefit of standards compliant websites? Do they all have to be? Is it just for people who want to work in web design/development? If i learned HTML and CSS and then HTML5 and CSS3 then that would be enough for a start wouldnt it? WOuld i ever need to learn XHTML or XML? Then i could move on to php and javascript etc Matt
  19. Thanks for this, ive just ordered it aswell as it looks very up to date and easy to use. Have you tried it yet? Matt
  20. Recent i think? Got it from amazon Matt
  21. Hi, Ive got my book now (Sams HTML and CSS in 24hrs) and something it says in the first few pages has me confused. It says.. XHTML and XML are the new standards for web page creation. This book is XHTML and XML compliant so you wont have to relearn it when it replaces the out of date HTML Is that true??
  22. Ive just ordered a book on HTML5 and CSS3 so fingers crossed i should pick it up. Can i just ask a question that might sound really stupid? What is the normal size that a website is written in? I would imagine 1366x768 is probably the most popular sieze due to the amount of 15" laptops about. If something is written is this size and is then displayed on a 1920x1080 screen would it look weird? Matt
  23. Based on that way of thinking, would it be better for me to learn HTML and CSS so i get the basics and an understanding of the previous and THEN learn HTML5 and CSS3? Matt
  24. Is CSS just CSS , there isnt a newer version out is there? Matt
