Agree with Rallport that if it ]'s your own website, the first and best option is to log into Google Webmaster tools. Use the other tools incl. backlinkwatch.com to get backlink information for competitor and other domains.

You know I don't think you need to sweat over what to put in a long letter. Just state your case succinctly saying how you are a local web designer helping local business (people like to deal with local suppliers), links to sample sites (I would ask for that) and how people can contact you.

Even an automated feed of blog or news content sent out to social media helps create both traffic and the building of links, so in our experience the answer is yes. However as already said above, it works best with extra effort made to make manual posts and communications.

The most important aspect to SEO is having relevant content on your website. Think about the important key words or phrases for each page as you are writing the content. Good inbound links will follow good content. Make sure your content is regularly updated. Of course having a good meta title tag is also important, but don't go overboard in stuffing it full of keywords. Include the top keyword - or two - in the title, ensuring it forms a short statement rather than a list of words. Don't forget to make sure that the title and description tags are different for each page.

Hi everyone. I am pleased to have discovered this forum today, as I am often looking for feedback, inspiration or help finding code snippets etc. I have been designing websites since virtually the year dot, though my business is now focused around news and blog content provision. I run a team of experienced journalists and SEO guys out of our office in London where we write regular, unique content for a range of different clients, from one-man-bands to High St banks. Embarrassingly we haven't updated our own website at www.newsvend.com for about three years, so this is one of the top tasks to complete on the current WIP list!
