It seems to me that more and more people see themselves as web designers, in a half mile radius of me there are 6 web designers that I know of (could be more).
 
At times I do find I'm competing with people that own a copy of dreamweaver and have a vague ability to change information on a template. This can be a pain in the current economic climate as some small businesses struggle putting their hands their pockets. They seem to believe as long as they have something on the net it'll be OK.
 
Once I discovered we where competing against someone selling a free website, Yes that's correct selling a FREE website. The rogues in question where using the wix.com service and pushing websites out for £120 a time.
 
Only tips I can give you - Is really know what you are talking about and listen to the potential client. Whatever you do, do not hound someone to use your services.

I'm just in the throws of putting together another portfolio site, with this it is a mix of personality (via photography) but also has quite a corporate feel to it.
The user interaction will be spiced up with a little jQuery.
 
Just remember no matter what you do, not everyone will like it or even get it.

Agreed. I have been redesigning my website for years, every time I go back I change it.
 
A Uni project came up and I had to design two sites, I bit the bullet and decided to make one of them my site. Almost done. Very happy with it so far. All from following a proper brief.
 
 
I have learnt more doing my site then any I have done for a client.

While it's true that you'll always be your own worst client, there are ways around that and I think it is important to design your own site - if you're a designer, there's something very odd about not doing it.
 
The best way to get around the problem of designing for yourself (and one day I'll get around to doing this fully) is to treat it as a client project. Set aside time to do it during your working day, plan it out as if you were presenting it to a client, then design and build it according to the plan and specs you agreed with your client (ie, yourself). Don't let yourself make changes after you've signed off on one aspect of the design, just move on to the next. Don't put up with behaviour from yourelf that you wouldn't permit from any other client.
 
Ask yourself this: what would you think of a client who was so inconsistent with their aims? You'd think they were a bloody nightmare, you'd insist that every change they wanted to introduce after sign-off was paid for by the hour, and once the design was finished and delivered you'd pray they never contacted you again.

Erskine went through this process a couple of years ago.

The overall layout is fine, but I think the typography actually lets the site down quite a bit.
 
Also other than the Doctype, what else is HTML5?

In regards to a live website which is getting a facelift, leaving the old site running and then instantly launching into the new is the best way to go about things.
 
HOWEVER
A brand new website SHOULD have a 'holding' page made for it, this holding page may or may not say "under construction" with a fancy countdown if you wish, but it should also have at least a paragraph of "about us" text on it too. Why? Because Google likes mature domains compared to new ones and so it gives you a head start on the very basic SEO. I've seen holding pages for websites with a page rank of 2 or 3. Which isn't much for a website but for a simple holding page that is only a few months old is great!
